Introduction
The Mongols are known to be the nomadic people from the dry grass plains of central Asia. They are also recognized as the fierce horsemen and warriors. They were united in the year 1206 by the powerful chief known as the Genghis Khan. In the video "wait for the Mongols: crash course world history #17," john green presented possible reason as to why the Mongols were both awesome and not awesome. These amazing reasons are discussed in the subsequent paragraph.
Reasons Why Mongols Were Awesome
The Mongols promoted peace; this was major during the Pac Mongolic also known as the century of peace (Buell, Paul D, 35). Through peace it allowed the reopening of the silk roads which were major trading routes between China and European countries hence increasing cultural exchange as well as wealth.
The Mongols also led to improved trade partnership between China and the western countries. During the Pac Mongolic, the regions became stronger enabling trade became less risky, and the cross-cultural interactions became more intensive and extensive hence more goods were traded.
The Mongols enabled the spread of technology. During the Pac Mongolic, sharing of information, knowledge and cultural identity were highly encouraged. Additionally, some of the fundamental technologies and ideas in the world like printing and papermaking made their way across Asia through the Silk Road.
The Mongols were awesome since they promoted the cross-cultural interactions. Before the emergence of the Mongols empire, the Chinese and Europeans were unaware of others existence hence via Mongols the interactions between the two was possible and encouraged.
The Mongols led to the transfer of scientific knowledge (Weatherford, Jack, 76). Through this, the absorption of scientific knowledge majorly from China, Persia, India and Arabia led to the invention of medicine which led to many areas of life as well as culture. Keeping of army healthy was important to the Mongols created the hospitals to encourage the expansion of medical knowledge.
Reasons Why the Mongols Were Not Awesome
The Mongols promoted attacks on the Europeans. They expanded their empire using certain attacks with an armed cavalry (Weatherford, Jack, 45). They also wiped out the population of certain towns which resisted.
Mongols depopulated certain regions as well as confiscating their livestock and the crops. It is majorly to the regions which resisted their rule.
The Mongols also spread panic in Europe due to their warfare which sent the refugees fleeing towards the westward.
The Mongols conquest of Eastern Europe and central Asia allowed the spread of deadly diseases such as the bubonic plague to move from western China to Europe along the new trade routes. The plague led to the Black Death which killed around 35% of China people hence its population dropping drastically from 115 million to 75 million (Buell, Paul D, 35). Also, in Europe, around 25% of people died while decreasing the population from 79 million to around 60 million
Conclusion
In summary, the Mongols were good this is because they promoted peace during the Pac Mongolic, promoted trade along the Silk Road, initiated the spread of technology, led to cross-cultural interactions between the china and Europe. Also, the Mongols led to the transfer of scientific knowledge as well as the unification of Russia.
