The Roles of Demographers

A demographer plays a critical in analysing and projecting the growth of the population. A demographer analyses the information that he/she has and predicts what is likely to change in the future. The information is critical because it is used by the government to determine the future need. For example, the data provided by a demographer will tell the government what the colleges, kindergarten or even hospitals that may be needed in the future. The information is also essential to the government especially when legislatures are drafting the country's budget. A demographer is also responsible for understanding the history of a certain population and recommend changes that may be helpful to such a group. Additionally, demographers are tasked with the duty of being referees especially when it comes to giving grants and aids to a certain population. Finally, a demographer should be able to collect, analyse and compile data for demographic statistics.

Importance of Demography

Demography as a critical component for every country because it enables the government to plan for healthcare delivery system. In most developing countries, the child mortality rate is high because of lack of enough hospitals. The challenge can be solved by demographers who can help the government understand the healthcare need of the nation. The study is also critical especially when it comes to food supply management. Countries that often rely on aid to feed their people suffer from this challenge because of poor planning. The governments in these countries can be able to overcome the challenge if they use the service of demographers to understand the rate of population growth. Having such information will enable the government to come up with policies that ensure there is food security. Finally, demography is important because it will enable the government to deal with the housing challenge because they will have all the analysed data on the population.

Whether I can do the course

From what I have learnt in class about demographers, I would like to be a demographer. The statistical analysis and the theories that are used in this field are interesting. I would also like to interact with people learn about their cultures and beliefs. Additionally, the opportunity to work with the government and other agencies is interesting to me. I would like to be a part of an exciting career that is not limited to the office. The ability to advise the government and see my actions having a positive effect on the people is exciting enough for me to do this course.
