The craft art shows the Congolese figurine (1900), Fetish Effigy of Nkisi Nkondi. It has been extracted from the BNK collections which contain a collection of 20th-century African folk tale crafts.
Mathematical Patterns Analysis
In the craft art above, there are various geometrical features used to depict the African culture into an art. The frame of the art is rectangular in shape while the cup on its left hand is cylindrical in shape. The fingers of the right arm are folded in a manner that depicts oval shape, a shape which is also reflected on its mouth. Besides, since the image can be measured by plane geometry when the straight line is drawn from one point to another, and the background of the image is flat, it can be deduced that, the image represents the use of Euclidean Geometry developed by Euclid in the 300 B.C.
In the image, the symmetry is one of the characteristics of the pattern it possesses. It has rotational asymmetry where the image can be turned or rotated at the center point at a certain degree, and the image will still be congruent to the original one. For example, if the head is the center and the image is turned at an angle of 180 degrees, it will be equally similar as the old original image. In relation to the pattern used, it has not changed over time since the folk art was drawn for a particular purpose. Besides, the originality and meaning could change if any alteration is made in the pattern used in the art. The image has features which represent the Euclidean geometry since the sections of the image can be measured by the used plane geometry techniques.
The patterns are mostly common in the Congo region in Central Africa and it depicts believes, values and doctrines of their cultural background and practices. The pattern used was being used in the ancient Congo to describe the powerful kings, sacred medicine and insertions. Therefore, from the analysis of the above image, it can be depicted that mathematics, culture, and art can be integrated to give a meaning and direction to the society. In the image, the mathematical concepts are used to paint, draw or sculpt a cultural art that portrays the tradition of a given society (Congolese in Central Africa folk art). Without measurement, then the proportionality and quality of the art cannot be achieved. Thus, to enhance beauty in the presentation of any art or sculpture mathematics is paramount.
