Since time immemorial, music has been a tool for communication of important messages while at the same time serving as a tool for entertainment. While the role of music has instrumentally through the years, the purpose of communication and also entertaining are the fundamental roles that have been shared across all generations. In the medieval times, for instance, music was used by monks who could pass critical religious messages to the people while still giving the clergy breaks while preaching. Music was therefore just another casual genre that was basically used by people who had taken up some religious civilization. The use of music in the medieval age is not very distant from the way it is being used in the modern times. The only thing is that music has diversified and is inclusive of more genres, some used in the spiritual world, other used in entertainment among other reasons that have come with increased civilization. Music is, therefore, a literary genre whose influence and concentration has continually grown with increased human civilization.
The rise of music can be dated back to the medieval times when the ma fin est mon commencement was written down by Guillaume de Machaut (1300-1377). The music that was written by the author did not address the rhythmic part of music as the modern music does. Instead, the music concentrated on the newly found Christian religion. The music was a piece dedicated to the religious developments in the era which had brought differences among people. A notable issue of the music then is that it was never concentrated on the patters and the rhyming. Rather, it focused on finding a musical way where the message would trickle to the audience without observation of rhythmic patterns.
The main subject that the medieval music addressed were matters of religion as the song work asserts. Back then, the newly established church lacked a way to live in unison even when they had believed the same faith. The problem as identified by the artists then is that beyond having a common belief, they were not united by any other thing. The artists, therefore, preached the message of peace accrued to the religious faiths of their religions and hence the rhythmic pattern was not that important to them.
Going in the baroque era, however, matters changed in such an effective manner. During this time, European music made such a massive revolution. While the influence of Christianity and religion cannot be assumed in the era, there was a sharp division between artists, each in their divergent view singing about what they believed in. Conflicting religious affiliations were the central core of the songs. Henry Purcell is one of the baroque musicians. It is a genre that concentrated on the basis of faith where there were conflicting sides regarding the issue of the resurrection of the dead. The artist in the Dido and Aeneas- Act III only tries to influence the dividing groups that regardless of their differences, there was something that should make them happy that religion can calm their troubled hearts. Music during the baroque era, therefore, made a massive concentration in reuniting a divided people. The power of music in transforming people and making them more civilized is consequently seen borrowing from this age.
The medieval and the Baroque eras had a wide range of composers and musicians who had divergent views. However, this age was characteristic of a united front whereby only three composers dominated the field of music. W. A Mozart is one of the composers with his renowned song Dies irae, from Requiem is one of the most acknowledged songs. The classical era was more of an improved musical age whereby the use of instruments became widely known. The opening and the key signatures of the songs, however, had very little to do with religion. The music which is largely represented as non-that was inscribed in the carnality of the human life focused on matters that affected human life in its natural way. Accompanied by instrumentation, the music was pleasing in the ears of the listeners which made the genre a darling to many. The songs make a critical observation of human life and with the use of some rhythmic note; the message is delivered to the audience in an attractive manner.
After the classical era, the romantic era music took the lead. The romantic era music is a somewhat westernized genre where extreme romanticism was the order of the day. The songs which were carried on by the artists who could not keep up with the music of the classical era showed an application of extreme European promotion of their values. One of the most evident value characteristics of the European society is the extreme romanticism that was stressed in the songs. The period started in the second half of the 18th century. The Dandy Warhols were some of the renowned musicians of the time. The Bohemian like you is one of the songs which were done by the crew. It was a somewhat favorite music where the artists made a significant concentration on the lives of the people he lived with. Romanticism in this genre shows the extremes of societal evolution. The song was a promotion of internal coexistence among people who live and work together. Though the medieval music presented an idea of promotion of the European lifestyle, it used instruments and some rhythmic sense to push the idea of a united civilized people.
The modern era of music is contemporary music that started in the late 20th century. It is music that dwells in modernist, post-modernist, neoromantic and pluralist music. Modern era music is characteristic of changing of divergent views of presenting music with regard to the subject that the author presents and also the issue that they address. The Beatles are some of the modern era musicians who brought some of the very first revolutions in modern music in the modern times. Their song Tomorrow never knows is one of the most celebrated songs. The song is inclusive of romanticism and modernism as it talks of love, fair existence amongst people and pursuing personal dreams. The song combines modernism, post-modernism, and romanticism all in one song. The idea of combining modernism, post-modernism and also romanticism in one song comes in different proportions in the modern times. Modern songs are characteristic of the three factors and they are used in varying combination from one song to the other. Nonetheless, the idea of entertainment while delivering the message is still evident in all modern songs.
Conclusion
In conclusion, music has instrumentally changed across the ages. It is a result of human civilization that was brought about by religious knowledge in the medieval ages. It progressed down into the baroque age where music sought the address the societal differences that were so evident. Music progressed into the classical era, down to the romantic era and into the modern era with different changes being made in the music. The evolution of music is, therefore, a progression that has improved with enhancements in civilization with the two most important attributed being entertainment and information passing.
