1.1 Study Background

Yangmingshan National park is placed to the northern side of the Taipei city making it easily accessible. The park has various offers from which tourists can choose from and they include internationally known hot springs, wildlife, indigenous plants and hiking trails. The park was also home to Sulphur mining fields which since their decommissioning people can go and visit these mines (Lin, 2010). The tea plantation has been replaced by boutique style agriculture that has a focus on tourism, this type of agriculture brings beauty to the area. On the other hand, Tailing National Park covers a patchwork of coastal lands and has the following features that make tourists visit the park often; lagoons and mangroves. The park provides critical habitats for rare fish, mammals, and birds and is the safe haven for the endangered black-faced spoonbill. The park covers an area so precious to the Taiwanese which is the area their ancestors first set foot in after crossing the Taiwan Strait.

Reports indicate that Taiwan tourism industry has caught the eye of many tourists across the world in the last few decades to become one of the leading tourist destinations in the world (Kuo, Chung, & Kuo, 2012). This could be as a result of the Taiwanese island opening its doors to the outside world and it is an Asian island believed to be rich in cultural reserves has many people who want to visit and experience the cultural history that the island offers. Taiwan is an affiliate of the Chinese government and the increase in tourism activities can be accredited to the emergence of new wealth, demand for the visit of other parts of the world, and the reduction of travel restrictions across the world (Li, & Wang, 2013). These factors have increased the number of tourist arrivals for Taiwan to more than one million by the end of the last year.

The presence of promotional campaigns has made Taiwan become one of the most attractive destinations for tourists. The island being a Chinese affiliate boasts extensive and diverse culture, heritage sites, more one-hundred-year-old temples and culinary arts. The ability of the Taiwanese island to be able to satisfy the needs of the travelers that range from the services provided for that include the national parks, the night food markets and shopping cities within Taipei are the reason behind the large numbers of tourists that flock the island.

Having been closed to the outside world for almost three decades, the Island opened to the outside world as a way of the Chinese government trying to make an earning from the foreign exchange (陽明山國家公園, 2018). The economic development led to the improvements specifically the technological advancements that people do not visit the island for only tourism purposes but also for business.

Taiwan is currently a formidable tourist destination mainly due to the urban development marked by the night markets and the welcoming culture (Li, and Wang, 2013). The night markets were traditional places that vendors gathered to sell their merchandise but gradually developed into cultural spaces and special business areas that provide landscapes for different consumer behavior. The night markets are credited for the commencement and the continuation of the social-economic culture in the country, as they provide great places and opportunities for recreational and social activities (Lin, 2010). Government assistance and campaigns led to the internationalization of specific night markets such as Shilin, Luodong, Rueifong, and Fengchia. Therefore, the most popular tourist destinations are the Night Markets followed by the National Palace Museum. The research paper investigates the factors responsible for the booming tourism industry in Taiwan. In addition, the country has magnificent environment and landscape such as the Taroko National Park, WangYou Forest, Sun Moon Lake, Xiao Wulai Waterfall, and Green Island, which form the backbone of Taiwan's tourism sector. The other interesting feature about Taiwan is the mixture of the cultures that include the Chinese culture and the Japanese culture. The blend of the two has made Taiwan the most visited place is one of the major attractions for the Japanese for in one of the national parks were designed by the Japanese (Kuo, Chung, & Kuo, 2012). They hold rich Japanese culture that comprises of the bamboo trees, acacia among others, and species of trees that are part of the Japanese culture. This came up through the involvement of the Japanese in the restoration of the parks where they had to plant trees and make the place admirable. The Taiwan Lantern Festival is also a major attraction. As mentioned above might be the objective of one of the factors that responsible for the booming tourism industry in Taiwan.

1.2 Statement of the Study

Taiwan is one of the leading tourist destinations in the entire world. Tourists prefer the country because of the convenience attached to it. First, the various registered agencies provide great services that meet the tourists at the point of need. Secondly, the online enrollment of the various destinations such as the Taipei sightseeing and the Night Markets make it easier for the potential visitors to make a decision on the areas to visit. The development of infrastructure in the country, particularly in the borders that connect to China and other parts of the world, as the airports, are a huge boost to the country's travelers. The uniqueness in climate and the environment are added advantage to the travelers visiting the country. Fundamentally, Taiwan has great infrastructure, impeccable promotional strategies, support services, and undying government support that make it tourism industry a global phenomenon. Most of the international tourists love going to Taiwan for the island has the most it could offer, that includes both the Chinese culture and the Japanese culture that makes Taiwan become one of the leading tourist destinations in the world.

The paper focuses more on the reason as to why the number of tourists that visit Taiwan has increased over the last few years with the major focus being the two most visited national parks on the island. The reason for visiting Taiwan is many hence the research has been narrowed down to the two National parks. The reason behind the increase in a number of tourists that visit the island is a result of the Chinese government opening up the doors to the outside world for a country that was locked to the outside world for close to three decades. The main objective of the promotion of tourism in Taiwan is to enable the government to makes an earning from foreign currency. The motive behind this is unclear however it remains to be a matter of future research.

1.3 Purpose and Objectives of the Study

The research paper investigates the factors responsible for the booming tourism industry in Taiwan. The study will help the researcher investigate more on what are the main factors for them. The factors that will be discussed in the paper will include those based on tourism, business among others.

1.4 Research Questions

The proposed study will be guided by the following questions:

  • What are the factors that make tourists to visit Taiwan?
  • How has Chinese Government improved tourism in Taiwan?
  • What are the factors that have led to the increase in the number of tourists in Taiwan in the recent years?

1.5 Proposed Methodology

Data that is used in the research is collected through research from the government site and tourism statistics site of Taiwan that is available on the Internet. The other method of data collection is through the use of previously studied materials concerning the two National parks.

Linguistically, the term tourism buds from the word ‘tour'. According to McIntosh and Goeldner (1986), tourism is ‘the sum of the phenomena and relationships arising from the interactions of tourists, businesses, host governments and host communities, in the process of attracting and hosting these tourists and other visitors'. Beiger (1996) stated that destination of tourism is a geographical area that needs to provide service and infrastructure necessary for the tourist to stay. As it has been from the past, the tourism industry has evolved tremendously, tourism in the past involved countries that participated in moving armies so that they could conquer and rule new lands. However that changed as tourism became more of an exploration thing, people would travel far and wide to discover new lands, new oceans, and cultures. However, modern tourism is composed of traveling far distances, and the places to be visited or toured have to be interesting in nature, have accommodation and means to get there Page & Connell (2006). It is from the above concept that the following discussion is going to be concerned about tourism in Taiwan has been an island that has been opened for public visits for the last 30 decades.

Key elements of Taiwanese Tourism Industry

Tourism according to Kris (2018) is an extremely competitive business that requires tourist destination to continually introduce new ideas that meet the needs of the tourists and attract more to their country or parks. Globally tourism is changing daily with many regions marketing their tourist attraction sites using different strategies to convince individuals to visit these places. According to Kris (2018), there are two main elements which are the direct and the indirect factors that can convince people to attend these tourist destinations. Direct aspects in this industry include those areas and things that make the tourism experience attractive, fun and relaxing. These kinds of features include good accommodation, availability of transport for tourists and recreational facilities. A tourist destination having the right direct elements allows the visitors to experience their visit without having to worry about where they will sleep or how they will get back home. Direct elements provide a sense of safety to the tourists as well as to the commoners. Commoners are the main beneficiaries of the tourism industry in Taiwan, these are through the provision of jobs that are created by the tourism industry. These jobs reduce the levels of insecurity in the areas where tourists go, and it becomes a win-win situation between the locals and the tourists (Breda& Costa, 2006)

Indirect elements, on the other hand, are the supporting areas within the tourist destination that facilitates the happening of activities in the tourist industry. These elements include the available means of communications, infrastructure, the supply of necessities such as water and housing. Despite being indirect, these aspects of the tourism sector markets the tourist destination as they contribute towards making the trip memorable. Advancement in technology has improved incidental elements of tourism and without adapting to these destinations will lose out to technologically enhanced regions. The other indirect aspect is the advertisement done by the Taiwan ministry of tourism. Taiwan promotes its tourism industry through advertisements which are viewed by people from all over the world, however, it is not known to what levels the advertisements reach people outside Taiwan. It is through the use of registers found within the national parks that information around the reason for the visit of the tourists can be found.
