My Personal Values, Beliefs, and Intentions That Will Govern My Work Both at the University and in the Workplace
Professionals such as lawyers, doctors, and engineers have an ethical code of conduct that they are expected to follow. The professionals also understand that they have a moral responsibility towards their bosses, the community and the clients that they serve. Just like any other profession, a technical communication expert and a person studying Mechatronics Engineering with a minor in Computer Science have ethics that he should follow. My ethical code includes ensuring what I do is legal and does not infringe on the countries laws or the company policies. Such an ethical principle is not only essential in avoiding getting in trouble with the government but it also gives confidence to the clients. Most people would prefer to work with individuals that follow the laws and sell the products that are legally produced. My other principle is ensuring I am honest at all times. People should be able to trust us and understand that whatever services that we promise them will be delivered. Once people realize that a company or an individual was not truthful with information, all the trust will be lost. I, therefore, believe that being honest is one of the most important qualities both in school and in the workplace.
Additionally, I believe in confidentiality and its importance in the work place. There are information that is meant for public consumption while other information is private. As an employee, I understand that some information could be sensitive and should not be released to the public. The information could be about a news product of company finance. The ability to keep things confidential is yet another trait that I possess and believe it will be essential when I join the workplace. Other principles that I value and strive to uphold are quality and fairness. In whatever I do, I strive to offer the best quality and act in fair way. Being fair is essential especially when one has powers and is responsible for solving conflicts in the workplace.
Issues That May Challenge my Statement of Ethics
Although I believe in following the codes of ethics, I also believe there might be situations that may challenge the ethics. Some of the issues that I can foresee which may challenge my statement of ethics include; observing an ethical behaviour by a colleague or being told to do something that is morally wrong by a senior staff member. The summer internship that I had and my up bring has played a critical role in helping me deal with such an issue. The tactics that I can use is to reflect on the consequences of certain actions if I violate the code of ethics. By not taking decisions in a hurry, an individual will be able to gauge the decision that he/she wants to take and reflect on their severity. Additionally, I believe in engaging with more experienced people while faced with challenges. A person who has been in a certain industry for a long time will play a critical in helping with a situation that requires one to violate certain ethics. I have also been reading on the importance of ethics. Finally, my moral stand and the belief that we should do what is right will play a critical role when faced with a situation that challenges my ethics.
