Introduction
Sports play a very significant role in our lives, including contributing to happiness and comfort. Sports have been known; it builds discipline, especially in time management, enables individuals to become more responsible and build brotherhood. Shaughnessy describes games as an avenue to create teamwork from which a family can be derived. This is because, as a team, the relationship goes beyond just the game but digs into the private lives of the individuals. The relationships that develop among teammates may be long-lasting. Sports can be made a lifestyle, as a way of relieving stress, keeping physical and mental fitness. This would mostly apply to people who spend most of their day at work and therefore have time to join a sport. It gives a sense of belonging to the team members and remit loneliness. The aim of this paper is to discuss the role of sports in the lives of youths and the impact that promises of money and fame has on sports currently.
For the youth, sports have been a perfect avenue for developing character, and they are taught virtue and discipline even when playing with their opponents in tournaments. It shows the essential lesson of life on winning and losing and that it is just average. Sports give the payers a chance to analyze the loss, practice harder for a better match in the future. This is the very essence of life as at one point, one may be low, and another e elated. Some sports apply to people of all ages who build the community. Excellence in sports boosts confidence and self-discipline, especially where the person is taking the competition seriously.
Sports have also helped the youth evade so many things as far as crime and drug abuse is concerned. When individuals are idle and do not have work to do, the chances of engaging in illegal activates high because they are aggressive. This often happened where there is no role model, and the youth do not know what to do. Instead of idling, children and teenagers can go pass time playing, and therefore, avoid these vile activities and behavior. Sports also are very significant in reducing the causes of teenage pregnancy through discipline, confidence, and self-awareness among young people.
Recent trends have, however, recorded a decline in the number of youth participating in sports activities. Most say they prefer the gym which they don't but spent time on computers, phones, and tablets on the internets (Dacica, 2015). It has also be noted that the youths currently are not fit to run long distances and do heavy physical exercise, which is very unhealthy and costly. It affects the country in that, take, for example, taking in soldiers who can't run for long or are not secure and physically fit, the security of the country would be poorly managed. This explains the much attention that schools are putting on physical education. Sports can be taken as a career path where a person may decide to build a career in entertainment. Most of the established sportspersons are mentor the community s looking up to.
Statistics have revealed that about t 50% leave sports at early adolescents (Alexandr, Sergij, & Olena, 2016). Several theories explain this situation, especially among young teenagers. The parents and coaches play a vital role in the sport lives of the students. Research indicated that most of the dropouts were associated with how the coach or parents treated the child. For example, the common excuses given would be that the child did not have a good relationship with the coach and a poor relationship with the coach before college. As the child grows, they get new responsibilities, and time for games becomes limited in that they have to choose between the game, academics, and their lives. All these factors put so much pressure on the children, and the coaches face the challenge of having to maintain them.
Another problem that faces sports today is the issue of promises of big money and fame, which creates an allusion that the games are only for a few. This is the reason why most of these young ones would drop out of sports and concentrate on academics and their lives and leave the games for those who are believed to be pros. During the time of Shaughnessy, this was not the case; however, since sports accommodated everyone and were a source of recreation rather than focusing on money. The promise of wealth and fame has also encouraged vile behavior, which is being discouraged before. For example, some of the athletes are tempted to use steroids to increase their strength so that they can win the coveted medals. Those who fail to win are branded losers, and society plays the role of making them feel so. For example, in soccer, when a team consistently fails to beat their partners, they are termed as losers and therefore, may cause depression among the members. This can explain the trading of players in most of the international soccer games, especially those in premier and English leagues.
During the time of Shaughnessy, sports used to be an avenue of building friendship and relationship. This explains how his friend though miles apart, could always remember him and would get along once in a while. It is a place that even though rival was unavoidable as youths, they would have a way of solving their differences and building h the team so that they could win (Anonymous, 2020). They could also maintain a perfect relationship, even with the opponent teams. These are different these days in that. Sports are about the experts in the markets. These experts would be what every young person follow and want to be like them. This creates an allusion that the position can be attained by only one person and therefore sets competition. An example is if everyone in soccer career plays so that they can be like Messy or Christian Ronaldo someday. This disorients completely the role of teamwork and family creation as it is based on every man for himself.
Conclusion
In conclusion, sports have proven to play an essential role in the life of young people. Ranging from, health, mental, and physical benefits which they get through the exercise the sports expose the people too. Current trends are, however, changing this view of sports and make it a competition for exclusivity to those who master the games. As discussed in the essay, this is the reason why most of the children drop out of sports and opt for other activates. This is a calling for the leaders in sport to adopt rules that would encourage the young joining sports other than promising money, rewards, and positions. This way, the original essence of games would be restored.
