Introduction
Spirituality in the Workplace has been a topic of discussion for many years. It is a movement that began in the 1920s, in which individuals seek to use their faith or spiritual values in the workplace. There have been a lot of concerns about that topic since some of the spiritual values of the people do not reflect the culture of the organization. For example, it is noted that the Muslim tend to worship on Fridays which is also a working day for most of the organization around the world. Such actions tend to collide with their spiritual value of the Muslims since they believe that they should be given off every Friday for them to go and worship. Also, it is noted that some people try to use their spiritual value to influence others to try and have the same beliefs as theirs as they will try to teach other about those spiritual value (Giacalone 34). To some extent, such actions might not be wrong, but it will be against the rules and regulation of an organization since it's a working environment. There have been a lot of misconceptions about spirituality in the workplace. It is also noted that with the increased level of globalization, it has resulted in the increased cases of cultural diversity in the working place. That means that people from diverse cultural groups who believe in different spiritual values tend to work together. In such case, it will be important to respect others people's spiritual values in the workplace. This paper will discuss the topic of spiritual value in the workplace.
It is indicated that spirituality in the workplace is marked by themes of patience, tolerance, and acceptability of the mind to the norms of the organization while religion is marked by a specifics beliefs and a particular system of faith. Some people can be spiritual, but they might not be religious (GarciaZamor 56). This means that such people believe in the existence of a Supreme Being by them do not confront the standards of any religion. In such case, such people will try as much as possible to live by the morality of the society. This includes respecting other people opinions and trying to work as a team. In the workplace, it is highly encouraged that people should be based on such virtues instead of being religious. When it comes to religious matters, it will mean that some people do not want to associate with others who have different opinions about their religion. Such aspect will result in a lot of conflicts in that working environment which would affect the performance of the organization. That is why it is recommended that people should try to enhance spirituality in the workplace, as it is more general.
According to reports, Christianity is another of most dominant religion in the world. This means that the majority of the employees who work in different organizations around the world as Christians. There are values that relate to Christianity, which focused on spreading the gospel to other people. In that case, it is likely for Christian employees to try and teach others about his or her spiritual value. In some cases, some of the organization tends to minimize such issues, as they believe that it reduces the concentrations of the employees since they will be more focused on spiritual matters (Mitroff 57). Based on that, the management tends to establish strict rules and regulations about the issue of spirituality in the workplace. Islamic is the second most dominant religion in the world, which has a lot of spiritual value. For the Muslims, they believe that on Fridays, they need to worship their God. This is a common practice in most parts of the world. In recent years, most of the organization tend to question their employees about their spiritual value before there are employed.
It is reported that 78% of employers are likely to hire people who respect their spiritual value (Mitroff 57). This is pointed to the fact that they will ensure that they observe certain types of morality, which will benefit the organization. In most cases, the spiritual values tend to confront a person to behave in a certain manner, which is very appropriate. For example, one of the spiritual values for almost all domination is honesty. This means that when an employer hires spiritual persons, he/she would expect that person to be honest. Such virtues motivate employers to embrace spirituality in the workplace since it presents important virtues for both the employees and the management (Mitroff 57). Most of the employers focus more on the benefits brought to that organization by embracing spirituality in the workplace.
The constitutions of most countries in the world tend to include some of the spiritual values since it helps to guide the people, in the way. For example, countries that are mostly dominated by Christianity are likely to include the Christians values to boost the integrity of the people as the Bible explains how Christians should behave (Mitroff 57). This means that the majority of the employees would also include some of those important virtues in their places of work. Hard work is another common Christian's virtue that is also included in the Bible. By allowing such type of values in the place of work, it means that it will inspire more employees to be hardworking.
Influencing satisfaction is another common spiritual value in the workplace. Since the spirit in the workplaces encourages other people to bring wholeness in that working environment, it tends to increase satisfactorily in those regions. For example, for Christians, the Bible indicates they every person should work as if they are working for God. This statement indicates that Christian need to give their best in everything that they are working on. It inspires more Christians to be very hard working in the place of work (Mitroff 57). They believe that they will not be obeying the word of God if they fail to put their best in that action. As such, the management tends to benefit a lot from such Christian values, which inspires them to hire religious people. Respect is another virtue that is associated with spirituality in the workplace. It means that employee is likely to abide by the rules and regulations of that organization. In addition, it will promote respect among each other. Based on the fact that a person is Christian, it does not means that the individual will only respect others who are of the same religious background. They need to respect everyone as the Bible indicates that God is created, everyone (Mitroff 57). The same aspect tends to apply to other religion around the world. Such actions show that it will result in a lot of respect in the place of work, which will create a conducive environment for all the employees.
Spirituality promotes equality in the workplace as most of the religious doctrines indicate that God created everyone equally. The issue of gender equality has been one of the main topics of discussion for the past centuries. The government has established various rules and regulations about the issue of gender equality. However, it has not been very effective since some women are still discriminated based on their gender. In that way, it is argued that the best way of dealing with gender inequality is through the provision of spirituality in the workplace. For a person to be considered to be spiritual, the action of the person must part certain values which include respecting people of the opposite gender. Researchers point out those organizations that have the most number of spiritual people have high chances of embracing gender equality. It will result in respecting others people because of their gender, which will also be a way of fulfilling the commandment of God in their lives.
Job satisfaction is another common element associated with spirituality in the workplace. Most of the religion gives detailed information about the way a person should behave. For example, in the Christians denomination, it is pointed out that everything happens because of the will of God. This means that when a person is working in a certain organization, it is the will of God for that individual to be working in that place at that time. It gives the individual a sense of satisfaction while working for that organization (Krishnakumar 75). In a way, it also boosts the morale of that individual in the sense that the person would try to understand the reason that God wants him or her to work in the organization.
What is more, it will be an inner motivation, which is very beneficial for any organization. Even without including any methods of motivating the employees, they will still be motivated by their spiritual values. For the Muslims, they believe that Allah wants them to behave in a certain manner, which would include acting on their best behaviors (Krishnakumar 66). That is why it is unlikely to find a spiritual person in the workplace misbehaving. Such actions are considered an abomination to that religion. Also, as a way of protecting the values of their religion, people will try their best to behave by the law which is a boost for that organization. That is why the recent reports indicate that most of the employer is seeking to hire people who have spiritual backgrounds. Such employers will interview their candidates depending on their spiritual values as they believe that it will impact that organization positively.
It is also important to discuss how spirituality in the workplace can impact that environment negatively. Based on the reports, one of the reasons that have led to increased cases of terrorism in the world is due to different religious ideologies. Some people tend to consider others who do not belong to the same denomination as their enemy. For example, it is pointed out that some of the Muslims tend to consider themselves as Jihadist in which they will try to fight other people who do not confront the Mulish religion. Similar action experiences in the world place. Some of the organization that has employed people from different religious background tends to face a lot of conflicting issues. People from one religion might try to undermine other from a different religion (Krishnakumar 56). As such, they will be a conflict if ideologies in that working environment which would affect production level. In such a case, the employer tends to forbid any type of spiritual matter in the place of work. Every person is supposed to respect another one religious matters, which should not discuss them in public. As much as the organization might not want to deny any person to be spiritual, they try as much as possible to avoid any conflicting ideologies (Krishnakumar 95). One of the ways of addressing such issues is to train the employees on how to respect others, people, spiritual matters. Such type of train should focus on cultural diversity. In addition, when hiring certain people, one of the qualifications should focus on respecting spiritual matters of other individuals. Another way of dealing with such case is through enhancing strict rules and regulating regarding the issue of respecting other people's spiritual matter.
Absenteeism is another genitive aspect related to spirituality in the workplace. People around the world belong to different cultural groups who have different spiritual matters. Some of those spiritual aspect trains that people to dedicate one day for the spiritual purpose. For example, among the Muslims, it is required that they worship on Fridays and it is practiced all over the world. In that case, it is reported that most of the Muslim fail to appear to work on Friday as it considered to a day dedicated to worship their God. Such types of cases are very common in the Middle East as it is one of the Islamic nations in the world (Krishnakumar 77). Such actions have a negative impact on the organization, as it will reduce productivity on those days of the week. It would not be righ...
