Social support is commonly perceived in the context of appraisal, material support, emotional support and informational support. Emotional support is a type of support that avails people with acceptance and people are valued based on their worth regardless of their individual fault. For instance, while parents provide emotional support, the functional role of a school is inclined to material support. These process of socialization transitions children into adults. Specifically, social support through the agencies of socialization influence people throughout their lives and define the types of interests, values, jobs, and decisions they have in a society. These primary agencies of socialization have helped me define my dynamic process.
Family: My family had a significant influence on my values and beliefs at my early years. My parents are married with four children. All my siblings are boys, except me, and we are five years apart. I enjoy my position in the family in that I am protected and lectured less than my bothers. The culture of my family has also shaped responsibilities at a young age. Our Mexican culture demands the children be raised in a strict setting in the context of obedience and respect. Girls in my culture have to look after their brothers even when we are not responsible for the mess and we had to wash everyone's dishes. I began these chores when a attain seven years. Since Spanish was my parent first language, there were times when we had to translate English words to them. Specifically, this appeared a challenge to me because sometimes my parents would be keen to hear an insult when my English neighbors had a fight. Regardless, my home environment had the ideals of love, collaboration, and encouragement. We consistently encouraged to strive for success because education resulted in economic stability.
Community: My community did play an important part in my upbringing of values because during middle and high school, I became a part of a church. I went to church on Sundays, Wednesdays, and whenever there were other volunteer opportunities. My church volunteered in food drives and donations not only to our community but to other third world countries. I also had opportunities to lead our church band and sing as well. Singing was something else that I learned to do because of the church. My mom never raised us to go to church but she made sure that we knew that there was a God. I asked her if I could attend a Christian church when I was in seventh grade. She was a bit hesitant, but later on, realized after she let me go that it was another positive thing for me to be doing. I made many friendships with adults and other kids my age, and soon it was like another family I could go to. The church was another place that approved what I believed in which was treat others the way you want to be treated, help those in need, work ethic, opportunities, happiness, and love. The friendships that I made in the church also helped me with letter recommendations for college applications and work applications.
School: I developed an interest in the school curriculum at my Kindergarten. Before my preschool, my mum taught some basic education. While my mother was committed to ensuring that we succeeded in school, the roles of my father were inclined towards family's financial provision. My high school years were quite different from primary school as I had to be associated with either lower class student who was careless and truant about school regulation or middle-class students who supported the school rules. Particularly, this triggered me to reflect, plan and assess so as to project my future state and attain consciousness based on my school existence. At first, I was in an ethical dilemma between the two cliques of student because as much as I wanted to do well in school, I also felt like drinking and doing crazy stuff that teenager do. After processes of reflection, I found myself developing a balance between the two student ground and two different set of social lives. I could sometime relate to the middle-class student when I needed to focus on my studies and equally associate with the popular group when I needed to misbehave.
Religious Organizations: Religion has been a conflicting aspect of life. When growing up, my parents introduced me to one religion which was a custom to my community. It felt wrong to believe in something because I was commanded to so. In fact, this was apparent to my childhood myths of Easter Bunnies, Tooth fairies, and Santa Claus. At a young age, I learned that believing something on the basis of hearsay only results to disappointment. In my junior years, my mind had developed and begun asking my neighbors about their religious beliefs which had not answered fully. Of course, I resolved to search for more information.
Peer Group: School and my peers were interrelated because it was based on my interests. I was very popular and extrovert with my peers. My friends are the most enjoyable aspect of my life. I have accentuated relationships and communication with my peers while sustaining heterosexual interaction that has invested more in emotional rather than material aspects of the relationship with my peers. I have come to learn that high achievement in learning environment does not necessarily entail isolation and unpopularity.
Organizations: After my graduation, I was on my way to a Music college to study music but returned to look after my sick mum and young brothers. The situation turned different as ended up becoming my brother's caregiver while my mother left to go Texas to live with my Father. I attended a nearly at a community college with the ambition of attaining my career goals. I had hopes that one day I will be a musician. At the time, the sacrifice felt right because I was doing it for the family. During my second year in college, I secured a job because I was required to pay bills and help my brother. After a year, my mother came by brother and returned with him to Texas. I took a semester off later on and focused more on work and the close friends that I kept. My music dream began to diminish as a developed other career ambition. I joined a punk band for a year and that was loads of fun because we traveled to play at different gigs. That was a whole new experience, environment, and opportunity. I enjoyed it while it lasted but then we broke up because we all started to move in different directions of our lives. My boyfriend and I had been going out for a year already and we moved to Washington. I became a nanny and attended a Community College. I was already interested in child development so I continued my education in child development and took some other education classes as well.
Media: I paid minimal attention to the media because I was always caught up in school and extracurricular activities. However, I was more interested in fashion magazine which significantly defined my social status and my interaction with my peers. Having information about the latest dress in the market made me appear popular among my school mates. However, with the advancement of internet and social media, I have resolved to other platform of making me tuned to the current fashion trends.
Era: Two significant historical events that impacted my life in this generation is the computer revolution and the economic crisis of 2008. Just like the people in the mid-20s, I am a real cyber native. I rarely wrote letters back home when I was at summer camp. Internet was my fact of nature, and I had a phone before I was 13. My parents were rooted into child rearing and were more protective. The economic collapse of 2008 was certainly the worst depression the country has ever experienced. My parents were forced out of work, and my father's bank collapse due to the crisis. The period caused panic, fear, loss of confidence, and altered my lifestyle. I moved home from my prestigious boarding school to stay with parents while they planned my alternative schooling. I ended up going to a low level day school twenty miles from home. I think this crisis slowed down my personal development.
Other: Although balancing school activities while still having time for hobbies has never been easy, I have relied on weekly plans which has allowed me to organize myself. My career experience has taught me a good strategy for work-life balance is essential for social and health practice. My main source of exercise is walking for pleasure. Mediation is an approach that has helped to adapt to challenging feelings and emotions. Rather than allowing my situations develop into nonproductive and intense, I try to feel my body where the stress is held. Through time management, I have learned to provide myself time and space to transition by letting the past things and allowing myself to anticipate for the coming moments. For example, when I leave work and come to class, I designed a simple task of taking in deep breaths to transition from my work moments and be in a class as well as home.
