Arefin, S., Islam, R., Mustafi, M., Afrin, S., & Islam, N. (2017). Impact of Smartphone Addiction on Business Students' Academic Performance: A Case Study. Independent Journal of Management & Production, 8(3), 955. DOI: 10.14807/ijmp.v8i3.629

This journal article documents on the impact of smartphone addiction on academic performance. It is based on extensive research and study that involved 247 business students from a private university of Bangladesh answering questionnaires, with Structural Equation Modelling being used to analyze the data. The authors clearly define the relationship between the young students and smartphones. Addiction to the smartphone is well brought out, explaining why smartphones and not standard phones. Features in smartphones like portability and data connectivity that cause the addiction are clearly defined too. The authors, to increase the reliability of their study, referenced some of the existing articles on the same research.

The article points out the adverse effects associated with smartphone addiction. With poor performance being their central theme, the five factors related to smartphone addiction are positive anticipation, withdrawal, cyber friendship, tolerance and disturbance in daily-life activities. The factors determine the habit of the business students and findings have it that the performance of the students is affected negatively. The higher the level of addiction, the higher the rate of performance deterioration. The main reason for this is because students spend more time on their smartphones than reading or even concentrating on class activities. The addiction also limits the time the students spend with their family members.

Even though the research methodology is clear, it is not fulfilling because only business students were used. Another weakness is the fact that the university used was a private one. Maybe it is a different case in public universities as the factor of mobile phone availability, and the background of the students plays a significant role. The journal could not be as helpful to the students as it only creates awareness but does not describe the methods to counter the addiction. In conclusion, the journal is useful to the society for awareness creation purpose, but not to the students who are victims.

Chevalier, A. (2018). Case Study: The Impact of Holographic Kinetics on Heroin Addiction and "Criminal" Behaviors. Alternative, Complementary & Integrative Medicine, 4(1), 1-4. DOI: 10.24966/acim-7562/100049

The author documents a case study that is about an analysis of the impact of Holographic Kinetics on a drug addict patient with a criminal history and violent behaviors. The patient is a male aged 19 years, with a violent history towards both people and animals, addiction to heroin and incarceration. The patient was obsessed with killing small animals since the age of 4 as a result of being sexually abused at his daycare by a female employee. He viewed humans and animals as objects. At a point, he almost killed his parents. The 19-year-old male became a heroin addict and a peddler too. The violent crimes led him to jail multiple times, and he eventually found himself in a high-security prison.

The patient then made a decision not to go back to high-security prison and requested Holographic Kinetics. After the first Holographic Kinetics session, he stopped using heroin, stopped the killing of animals and did not go back to jail. After the second one, he decided to go back to school to study fashion intending to start a business later. He also began cleaning up, and six months later he is still drug-free and is no longer killing animals.

The author presented the case well. He also brought out the reasons why any form of drug addiction should be stopped. The two HK treatments done so far have been effective. HK could be the future of drug addiction treatment even though further research on the same is vital for the validity determination of the findings.
