Social Commentary Song "Just Imagine" by John Lenon

The society has been undergoing various changes when looked from the perspective of behavior, interactions, and the kind of relationships that people form. The changes have been caused by the civilization that many have gone through and also the type of technology that has emerged. People are conscious of the kind of movies they watch and even the type of music that they are listening. Almost all musicians are therefore trying to come up with songs that are lyrically sane and those that promote social commentary aspects. In this case, the song under analysis will be, "Just Imagine" by John Lenon. The song is full of social commentary aspects in that it wants people to live as if there is no heaven and there is no hell, and therefore there is nothing to fight for and as everyone is urged live in harmony and love towards one another.

In this regard, there is an implication that the song is speaking to the people of the society by making them realize the fact there is there is a need to stay together at all times. Most people behave in various ways because they believe there is a God who wants them to behave in a good way and there is also an evil that makes them shift the kind of behavior that they display towards the negative side. All these factors were supposed to be taken away so that people can stop killing each other in the name of trying to remain on the safer side of life. This can be proved by the line, "Imagine there's no heaven/It's easy if you try/No hell blow us/Above us, only sky" (Lenon 1). This is a clear implication that Lenon wanted to live in a society that did not affect people regarding the kind of cohesion that was exhibited among them.

Not only does the song he urge people to take part in societal activities that are peaceful but also needs them to think on the same track when it comes to initiatives that are helpful to all. He wants people to think on the same line when it comes to togetherness. Lenon states, "You may say I'm a dreamer, But I'm not the only one, I hope someday you'll join us" (Lenon 2). The statements are the best form of comment availed to the society as it is pulling them together so that they can realise some of the dreams that have never been achieved. According to the song, there is a way in which the artists are inciting the society to take in some of the activities that they have never tried before. It is a way of making sure that everything is done according to the morals and expectations of everyone in the society. Consequently the people are likely to do the same if they realize that it has a lot of importance.

Lenon also interactively did the song although he did not intend to have anyone to provide answers to some of the questions that he was posing to the people. All that he wanted to see was a kind and constant rapport between the characters who found his song to be of benefit. In that case, he was always driving them into a world of fantasy. For instance, there is a lyric in the song that states, "Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can, No need for greed or hunger" (Lenon 3). This is a clear indication that people in the society are fighting over resources that are scarce and the consequences are not as per their expectations. At the same time, he wanted to see if people could change their behaviors and start taking the direction of the activities that he was trying to portray in the process.

Lenon still goes ahead to preach his word, and the fact that he has repeated them in the chorus section of the song makes it clear that he wants the society to look at everything from a sober perspective. The society is taking a direction that Lenon does not like and he, therefore, acts a savior whom they have been looking for over the past few years. Minute by minute, Lenon wants people to behave in a manner that is pleasing and appreciated when looked from a moral end. Furthermore he states, "Imagine there are no countries, It isn't hard to do," (Lenon 3). This means that he does not like the kind of segregations and dominations that people have over each other based on territorial subdivisions. In that case, the most appropriate approach to make is to live in a country that has no leadership, and everyone seems to be on the same level.

Conclusion

In conclusion, John Lenon took his time to come up with the lyrics to prove to the society that there was no need to live a life that was full of restrictions based on territories. He also wanted to establish the fact that heaven and hell are just perceptions and people can live without them. Even though it is not possible, imagining that divisions do not exist is the only in which they can maintain a steady and stable state between each. They can live in ways that are harmonious without any prejudice or stereotypes that come as a result of one belonging to a country that is different from the other.
