Introduction
Shameless is an American film that focuses on a dad who is an alcoholic with six kids. The father's name is Frank Gallagher, who is selfish by character. The elder sister's name is Fiona, who acts as the caretaker of her brothers and sister. Frank had split with his wife some years back; thus, the children had no one to take care of them except Fiona. Due to the assignment's openness, I decided to choose the film, and this essay will give a summary and the insight from the film shameless.
The three boys of Frank Gallagher are Philip (Lip), Ian, Carl, and Liam, while the girls are Fiona (Fee) and Debbie. The eldest son is Lip, who usually trades his physics knowledge and skills with neighborhood girls for sex. The second son Ian is Gay, and Carl, who is second from lastborn, is a budding sociopath, and also he is an arsonist. Debbie, the younger daughter, steals money from her UNICEF collection for the family upkeep while the toddler son Liam is black, but none of the parents is black. This brings confusion and misunderstanding to even his brothers and sisters.
Substantial Dowry
We also notice their neighbors Kelvin and Veronica, who fake their marriage to obtain substantial dowry from the first season. In the film, Kelvin works at a bar while Veronica is a nurse. We also introduction of a guy who acts as Fiona's boyfriend with the fake name Steve. The relationship of both Fiona and Steve emerges from a club. Steve lives a flashy life, and later Fiona discovers that he is a car thief. There is also a local police officer his name is Tony and also has something for Fiona. Fiona, on the contrary, is not even interested in dating the guy although they are involved in a sexual affair. After a while, Steve visits his family in Lake Forest, and Debbie learns that the real name of Steve is Jimmy Lishman. This brings uproar between Steve and Fiona on why he did not state what the truth was, and Fiona decides to break up with him, but that does not work for her (IMDb, 2017).
Debbie also learned that Steve's family s rich and thinks that their son is away pursuing a medical degree. Debbie also does not involve Steve's parents in his real-life. Instead, she keeps it a secret. On the other side, Ian is gay, and his sexual orientation is not well known by many of his family members. The only person who knows about Ian's sexual life is Lip and his girlfriend, his girlfriend known as Mandy. Things become complicated because Ian is also having a sexual affair with Kash. This guy Kash is the owner of a certain store where Ian works after school. Kash is also married to Lind, who he does not love. Later Linda discovers the affair after installing security cameras in the store. This leads to Linda blackmailing Kash about giving him the baby to take care of her.
Sexual Relationship
Ian is also involved in a sexual relationship with Mandy's brother, who is very violent and a thief. Frank continues to be an alcoholic, making his family look like breaking up, but Fiona Fixes everything. From the character portrayed by Frank, a lot of lessons are learned. People learn that they should try their level best in achieving their children's respect. Frank's children do not accord him any respect. This is seen as Fiona even drags him on the floor after the cops drop him. She even does not care about the well-being of her dad. People should also learn that bar buddies are not your friend. As Frank struggles with his life, none of his friends comes up with some help; instead, they keep on laughing and mocking him out.
We also see bad things happening to the family after Frank neglects them. There is misconduct of all the children, and they become uncontrollable. We also see Lip dropping out of school, which is a result of him lacking parental care. There are sexual affairs to the young Debbie, which in the future results in unplanned pregnancies. Every child needs good parental care so that he or she can be taught how to plan for the future. Counseling is also a need for good behavior. This is mostly done by someone's parents because if parents do not teach you the best ways to conduct, then other people would harshly take part in reaching you (IMDb, 2017). This is portrayed by Frank's children's arrests because Frank and his wife neglected their children to be on their own. Fiona acting as the guardian, does not provide enough everything for the family, which also makes her not get sufficient education because she spends most of her time feeding her siblings.
Toxic People
The film also teaches that one should, by all means, cut toxic people from their lives. This is shown by Fiona as she is involved in many relationships that do not work out essentially. Due to the reason that Fiona wanted to be loved well, she confused dependency on sex, thus making her fall into traps every time. She does not hesitate as she cuts them off to continue looking for Mr. Right, on which it becomes hard for her to secure one. She becomes depressed, but Fiona does not fall for less. People should also learn to respect their money. From the way Kelvin behaves, we see that people should learn to decide where to spend their money. The other character who teaches how to control money is Debbie, who uses her UNICEF contribution to make her brothers and sister's life better.
People should not rely on other people for help every time. This is first shown by the ability of the children to put food on the table. They do not wait for their father's money for upkeep, but instead, the children always work hard for their better lives. Everybody in the family is working hard to make their life better. People should also learn that the past should be cut off for prosperity. No one should allow past mistakes to overrule their lives in any way. From the film, we see Lip battling with alcohol addiction and his obsession with a female professor. This affects his life so much. Search flashbacks ruin lip's life, but later, he overpowers the setbacks and becomes a better person. The love between family members is also quite commendable since they can do anything for one another.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the film serves as an educational movie for children and their parents. The drama that has happened in the film has led to consequences, making people have something positive about them. Alcoholism also is well shown together with the effects it poses to the community. There is also hard work portrayed within the film, and people learn how hard work pays. Many people look at the film as educational on how a family should be and which roles parents should play in upbringing their children.
