Introduction
Corporate Social Responsibility is a topic that has gained popularity in recent decades due to its significance and roles in society. In order to fully learn and understand the effects of upholding or withholding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), I carried out my research by taking a deep look at the existing online sources and publications analyzing the issue and came up with an adequate analysis of the matter.
It is important to note that my research was very successful in analyzing the research question at hand. It gave an insight into the CSR world, giving comparisons between different multinational companies as well as small local businesses. I liked the fact that more awareness was being created amongst companies to ensure that they incorporate CSR as part of their main objectives in a bid to help the communities living in the areas around these companies. I disliked how some big multinational and even local companies failed to enact the CSR despite the huge amounts of profits they are able to make year come year go. These companies set the pace in the industry as much as the implementation of the CSR is concerned. They are easily emulated by other small and medium companies thus choosing not to support the CSR initiatives is likely to influence other companies on the same dangerous path.
Generally, I was pleased to see some small companies enacting the CSR regulations, unpleased to find out many companies are still not compliant. This whole research experience made me have a different approach to analyzing complex situations, problems, and matters that need intervention.
My first impression upon seeing the essay question presented here, "A business' only responsibility is to produce profit", was that it is a completely shameful and wrong way of thinking for business owners and especially the corporate. The consumers have given them the opportunity to do business with them, making their companies flourish as a result. Therefore, they should be in a position to willingly give back to society.
As I stated earlier in the introduction part of this essay, I did my research through credible online sources, databases, and publications. However, the research was not comprehensive enough, given that there still existed a big opportunity to do more and come up with a lot of data in terms of statistics, percentages, rates of effects and many more. In my next research on CSR, I will carry out online surveys on customers and administer questionnaires as well.
My opinion on the subject matter built progressively and steadily as I searched for more information from the past researches on CSR. The elaborate case studies presented gave a deep understanding of the matter and possible solutions for such problems. to be more knowledgeable about CSR, I will have to set up interviews or appointments with managers, CEOs and engage the government and independent bodies responsible for enacting the legislation on CSR and discuss with them a number of issues on the same matter to get an in-depth understanding of CSR. The knowledge gained from such interactions have many uses, for example, I would use the knowledge to enact the regulations in my company once I own mine.
Discussing difficult matters is very effective in spreading knowledge about difficult issues and concerns. To prepare for the in-class discussions and debate, I ensured complete grasp of main points, main terms and the given real-life examples presented for the case. Next time I could do better by reading books and journals to make me knowledgeable of the subject, thereby making me effectively ask and respond to questions asked. Such knowledge would be important in my future activities in situations such as job interviews that need thorough preparations.
Academic essays are regarded to be strong when they provide adequate, specific and elaborate analysis of the subject matter at hand and provide satisfactory answers to the research topic in question. An academic essay should have relevant evidence either from the writers' own research or from other sources, which answers a solid and debatable thesis of the given research paper ("5 Ways to Quickly Improve Your Academic Essay Writing Skills," n.d.). My reflective essay had the basic structure of an academic essay. It had an introduction that gave an overview of the subject, a description of terms and a concise thesis statement that guided the whole research. The introduction was followed by the body which gave an in-depth analysis of CSR impacts on businesses. The last part was the conclusion, which summarized the essay and gave a final verdict about the subject matter discussed.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I carefully chose my references. They were selective and credible online sources. They contained detailed and rich information regarding the subject and thus the reason for me choosing them over others. My sources were also chosen based on the preference of having different opinions from one another source to create a wide range of perspectives regarding the subject matter. In my next research, however, I intend to add more books and journals to my referencing list as opposed to online articles since these offer more in-depth and insightful evaluations than the articles.
