This negotiation was very critical in my life as I had just been offered a chance elsewhere, in a rival company. I had to give all my best as the salary was the one to determine whether I would stay in the company or opt to go where I had already been contracted. In the past, I have been involved in a salary negotiation situation, but not as this one since in the initial one I had no other opportunity. Hence, I did my best in terms of the research on my market value so that I have an idea of what other persons of my profession are earning in the organization and other similar organizations.
During the negotiation, I was quite sure of why the amount I would ask is significant to me. With all the information from my research, I began by presenting my track record. I highlighted some of the successful projects that I had undertaken in the past, validating them by use of quantifiable data such as timeframes and figures. I demonstrated my value precisely and put forward the decision-influencers from my recommendations. I even invited them to meet some of my recommenders whom I have worked with before. I avoided going into the money talk early, as well as circumventing the salary requirements trap. I then made a specific range for the negotiation. I mentioned some other prospective rival employers who are interested in my services. I talked of my expectations, such as salary, job, benefits as well as opportunity. I then brought the issue of extras benefits such as telework options, bonuses, paid vacation, and pensions, as well as funded education. Besides, I inquired on metrics that the company uses to assess employee's performance as well as the outlook for salary promotions. After agreeing, we then noted down all that was approved.
From the interview, I managed to increase my confidence, as well as experience in terms of salary negotiations. Just as they say, 'practice makes perfect'; I managed to improve on my timing and precision during the interview. Further, the experience has taught me that companies are more interested in whatever one will bring on the table, and they will be ready to offer you any value. Lastly, your performance history will say a lot when it comes to being hired. The company was interested in me, more so when I tabled my previous achievements in some of their competing organizations Additionally, I realized that how you present yourself during an interview may be different but still manage to be offered a negotiate salary. From my interaction with others, I got different views of how I can successfully negotiate for a wage. However, self-confidence and knowledge are the most that matter - education in terms of experience and justification of previous achievements.
In terms of comparison, I realized that this experience is similar to others that I have attended. In terms of the negotiations, I managed to understand that the company is more interested in whatever I will bring to the table. My past also will speak volumes for them to consider me. Besides, the employers value visionary individuals, who will go beyond just the job, to ensuring that the company's market value is on top.
From this negotiation, I learned some lessons which will be of significance t me and can as well inspire someone that is to have a negotiating salary interview with a potential employer. Sometimes it is not your merit that matters, you are worth your market value; getting a no for an answer is a chance to solve a situation, in most occasions, you will not be awarded what you deserve, but what you negotiate for; your previous salary does not really matter to your new job; negotiations are more of determining one sinner value, developing poise, and translating it to outside; in a negotiating salary situation, its not about money only, think of negotiating extras such as vacation, title, insurance among others; do not be too quick to respond or suggest an offer in an interview; and lastly, everything is a negotiation, so having a formula for each situation is vital.
Conclusion
There is still more likeliness that I will find myself in a similar situation, and my wish is to be more active so that I will be on the winning end. I believe that I have mastered more experience and confidence to help me secure an offer that suits me. Hence, I will maintain the skills that I have already acquired, for instance, doing prior extensive research, being confident in the interview and precise, asking for other negotiation extras during the negotiation, clearly explaining and justifying my market value. On the other hand, giving a try is not bad; hence, instead of providing a range, I will pose a specific price as a negotiating offer. From what I learned, sometimes being particular on the proposal gives the employers a chance to debate on it, after clearly defining your market value.
