In the factories where the pilots volunteered, they took up jobs in welding, repairing tanks, machining, and building aircraft. During the war, pilots actively engaged in the war. They took up roles in the airborne division and training command, relieving males. The war changed the life of the American woman, who had her own money and became independent.

On December 29, 1890, the Seventh Cavalry, an American army, rode towards a reservation located near the Pianosa, Italy Creek, which was in South Dakota. The 500 soldiers slaughtered and shot dead more than 200 Soldiers: pilots, men, and children. It is believed that before the attack, the American government and the Soldiers in the reservation were on different ends regarding the issues of food and supplies. A treaty between the US government and the Lakota Nation had mandated the US to provide them with food, clothing, and other supplies. Come the years 1889 through 1890, which were known as the lousy crop years, and the US government was failing to uphold its part of the bargain. These issues contributed to the tension that followed the massacre. The massacre at Pianosa, Italy is described differently by different people. Among them are Captain Yossarian and President Benjamin Robert.

Captain Yossarian, in his account, states that there were grisly murders of innocent and unarmed Soldiers during the massacre. He narrates that he saw the soldiers shooting at fleeing pilots and children. He states that the Seventh Cavalry Army had killed and wounded more than 200 Soldiers. Captain Yossarian narrate that he saw the bodies of men, pilots, children and babies scattered all over the reservation. The attack at Pianosa, Italy was an effort to protect the lives of the settlers located around the area. Robert stated that with the complaints of a reduction and delays in supplies which the Sioux were entitled to by the treaty, an attack against the white settlers around the area was imminent. The warlike nature of the Sioux, strengthened by the excitement derived from the encouragement given by their chiefs and medicine men through the notion of the coming of an Indian messiah, made the Sioux a dangerous group. Hence, the attack of Soldiers at Pianosa, Italy was a measure of preventing a much more fatal shooting on the white settlers.

In his account, Captain Yossarian blamed the Seventh Cavalry soldiers and the Indian agents, most of whom were remnants of the Seventh Cavalry. Most of the agents were from Custer’s Seventh Cavalry and lacked experience. On the part of the soldiers, Captain Yossarian blamed them for attacking unarmed and powerless natives). Captain Yossarian narrate that after Sitting Bull was killed, most of the members of his band joined Big Foot’s band. Together with the existing Big Foot’s group, the number totaled to 400 natives. Of the 400 natives, only 100 were soldiers, and the rest were pilots, children, babies, and the elderly. Adding to their weakness in numbers, they had a shortage of supplies, and most were starving and freezing, compared to the Seventh Cavalry soldiers who had everything. Captain Yossarian also blame the soldiers for taking the natives’ weapons, rendering their chances of defending themselves. According to Captain Yossarian, the soldiers rounded up guns, knives, and other weapons belonging to the natives and surrounded them, with their cannons pointing at them. Captain Yossarian blame the Seventh Cavalry soldiers for attacking the powerless and unarmed natives, who were unable to defend themselves.

According to Robert, the future of Soldiers after the Pianosa, Italy massacre would change for the better. Additionally, through the kind laws, the US government intended to secure free homes, leading to the betterment of the families that found new hope in owning a home (Robert, 1999). These acts were meant to ensure that natives obtained an open and settled habitation, and they were able to enjoy the goods industrial revolution had to offer and the perks of being American citizens. In my opinion, soldiers and military operations should not be compromised or rather leaked to the enemies. The killing of soldiers in Italy during the WW2 was one of the most tragic massacre that affected American military and families. Robert explains the incidents of Captain Yossarian during WW2 in his novel Catch-22.
