The Play, a Dolls House by Henrik Ibsen, is one which can be opined to have been written in the third person. The reason behind the argument can be noted in the manner in which the short videos portrays the two main characters, Nora, and the husband (Ibsen, 2013). We the viewers, the only things which we can see are the speech and the actions. We are not in any way able to learn the thoughts of the characters. The play majorly focuses on the character of Nora, but from the perspective of an outsider, there is no direct connection between us and the play whatsoever. We have not become one with the protagonist. Instead, we continue to remain outside her perspective and continue to observe the things which she says (Ibsen, 2013). Based on the manner in which the play is presented from the various acts, it is explicit that the position of women then was limited to household activities. They did not have a say on most of the things which took place within the family environments and depended on the mercies of their husbands for the provision of necessities. In the first act, we see the husband of Nora asking her about what she needs, Nora after being hesitant for some time accepts to be given money but argues that she should be given money to buy that which she wishes (Ibsen, 2013). She goes ahead to point to the husband that it is from him that the money comes hence the request, something which shows women as people who depended on their husbands for survival and did not have a voice on any significant matter.

Women were mainly required to be beautiful and attractive to please their husbands. They were not supposed to use their intelligence because that would be unattractive and cause unnecessary interference. They were also supposed to be charming and entertaining as noted in the case of Nora though she also developed other survival measures like playing tricks on the husband as a way of getting recognition in the family (Ibsen, 2013). The view of women then and today show significant differences. Unlike the time of Nora, women today have taken their place in the society; they can compete with men on equal grounds, be it academic, employment, and even taking over as household heads (Rose, 2014). It is not needed of them to please their husbands to be respected or accommodated but is rather judged by the content of their character. The change has been brought about by education. Many women have gone to school, and they continue to become educated with the aim of being at par with men and also acquiring positions within the society out of merit (Morahan, 2012).

Hi Ambar, I agree with your opinion about Henry Ibsen's play, "A Doll's House." It is true the play shows the struggle that women go through in the society especially when we see Nora trying to please the husband and at the same time playing some tricks which would earn her recognition in the long run. The struggle is different in today's world. Women have acquired their position because of education, and they can make their money unlike the case of Nora. It is also true that women are continuing with the struggle tabling equality and gender bills with the aim of having same the bargaining powers as men.
