Introduction

Bullying is an aggressive and intimidating behavior towards another person perceived to have lesser power and involves dominating another person. Bullying is a common problem in the workplace due to power differences between employees in healthcare organizations (Budden, Birks, Cant, Bagley, & Park, 2017). This paper will create a bioreaction of a bullying episode while working in a healthcare organization.

Environment

The environment before the before the bioreaction was calm with a lot of laughter in a summer afternoon which was characterized by high temperatures in the worker's lobby at the hospital. At the hall, we were sharing jokes and laughing with my fellow nurses when the supervisor suddenly appeared, and the room suddenly became quiet. The environment during the bioreaction was tense and quiet when the bullying supervisor suddenly appeared and began giving intimidating instructions.

Stimulus

The stimulus that triggered the bioreaction was the domineering supervisor character and disrespectful remarks that were intimidating and demeaning.

Bioreaction

My bioreaction was a motionless freeze as the supervisor demeaning and nasty remarks.

Physical Sensations

The physical sensations I experienced during the bioreaction were subdued anger, sadness, hopelessness, and despair wondering why the supervisor could use such disrespectful words and phrases yet I had been diligent in my practice. In the moment of the bioreaction, my eyes became filled with tears and turned red which indicated the internal pain caused by the bullying remarks and overbearing presence of the demanding supervisor who is rarely satisfied irrespective of how one behaves.

Feelings

The feelings I experienced before the social situation was calmness and happiness as we shared laughter with fellow nurses at the lobby before we could report to our respective duties. During the social situation, I felt disrespected and humiliated as the supervisor raised his voice in a rage which broke my heart. I felt unappreciated due to my dedication and towards taking care of my patients. After the social situation, I felt like I was losing hope and because I loved my work I was able to tolerate the supervisor remarks to avoid escalating the argument.

Reflection

If I am in such a situation again, I would be strong and not let emotions take over. Bullys play on an individual emotional weakness, and the more you show your frustration, fear, and pain they are motivated to continue their brutal behavior. Understanding that the reaction to the bully was a bioreaction due to the amygdala processing of the emotions I would decide to show resilience and non-aggressiveness. Therefore, through the experience, I am currently aware of the importance of remaining calm when going through a situation that can trigger a bioreaction (Gaffney, DeMarco, Hofmeyer, Vessey, & Budin, 2012).
