Introduction
The focus of the research is about a TV show that examines a civilian former fraudulent psychic who helped the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) solve crimes. Patrick Jane, a character in "The Mentalist," and an independent consultant with CBI, expresses a remarkable track record of solving serious crimes. He is made part of the investigation team because of his track record history and ability to demonstrate the highest competence skill. Patrick's Jane's central point of interest is to find out about the murderer of his wife and daughter, and apart from that, he expresses personal perceived conflict of interest. The study's purpose is to examine, explore, and investigate and reveal the focus of the research. The research question would be: What is the ethicality of having a civilian with a conflict of interest in solving crimes actively participating in police and investigation activities? It would be crucial to learn ethical considerations to solve and find out about the artifact and incorporate ethical theories such as utilitarianism to investigate and explore the research's purpose. A given methodology about to be introduced will also help in the exploration of the question at hand. The research paper broadly analyzes a Tv show "The Mentalist" by developing a research question that seeks to explore the ethicality of the relationship between the police department and a fraudulent and to examine its essence to a psychologist and criminologist.
Methodology
The methodology would focus on qualitative textual analysis, and paying close attention to the essential elements such as a summary of the episodes that applies to the case, consideration of the context, clear interpretation or judgment, and generous support (Sari, 2018). Season 1 Episode 1 of The Mentalist would be analyzed on a social media website, YouTube, and twenty clips. Selected scenes of the pilot episode will be reviewed for opinionated tones and attitudes regarding a civilian move to help in police investigations. Other authors' scholarly works and ethical theories would also be used to investigate the research question and explore if it is ethically permissible to involve civilians in police activities.
Mentalist Skill
The first clip, season 1, episode 1, focuses on a point where Patrick Jane employed his mentalist skill to find out what happened. It is just a single moment of the event, among others shown in the session. The point of ethicality is dependent on the audience's comments. Support by a considerable number of comments demonstrates the ethicality of having a civilian with a conflict of interest to participate in police and investigations. There are several comments commented by social medica users that support Patrick Jane's move. These comments are a clear indication that it is ethically to support police activities and investigations, even if you are a civilian with a conflict of interest (Sari, 2018). Audiences in this section are in love with Patrick Jane's mentalist skills, and the majority of them identified with the body language that demonstrates one has been caught. So, the point would be how social media users prove if a working relationship between the police and Patrick Jane is ethical (Sari, 2018). As earlier introduced, it would be acceptable if most social media users agree to this episode and its content. And since a good number of users supported Patrick's move, it is evident that it is ethically permissible for a civilian to work with police and in police investigations.
It is also essential to focus on ethical theories such as utilitarianism alongside audiences' comments. Utilitarianism usually focuses on consequentialism, and it explores the outcome of the action. From Patrick's move, several important information is revealed, and Jane uses the investigation to win at card tablets, which is an opportunity for him. Some of the actual data that has been considered as the outcome of Patrick Jane's involvement in the revelation of severed hand on the California-Nevada state line and the opportunity where the CBI team suspects a mafia hit. So, how do individuals consider it ethically, or Patrick's involvement as ethical? They should look at the outcome of the scenario, and how such benefits police and bring to justice a serial killer. Utilitarianism, alongside audiences' comments, support this and makes the whole concept ethically permissible.
Patrick's Claim
Since the main focus of the study is all about ethicality and Patrick's move to support police investigations, it would be essential to understand if it was ethical for Jane to claim that he supports CBI police investigations (Sari, 2018). The reason behind Jane's action would investigate or tell people about the ethicality of his claim. Apart from learning why Patrick decided to go public at a press conference, comments from social media sites will also tell the ethicality of Jan's action. Though most of the audience's remarks focused on Patrick's intelligence and mentalist skills, some of the same comments acknowledged and supported him. "I watched this series in hot-star. Expected red John episodes, all others turned to be boring. Patrick will anyway catch the killer with a smiling face and make all other cops look stupid.” (Precup, 2013). That always happens." If this is some of the comments that people look at when Jane move is questionable, it is clear that they would not raise an ethical question. Such indicates an acceptance by social media users for Jane to go public. It is crucial to keep that the ethicality between policy relationships and a civilian is based on audiences' comments.
Sociologist and Criminologist
It is important to note why this is essential to a sociologist or criminologist. It is also useful for a sociologist because he/she may learn from the scenario. A sociologist can use the knowledge gained to investigate what affects human behavior and social forces. There are interactive questions that Jane uses, which can be of help to a sociologist. Those interactive questions give sociologists insights into how people's lives are influenced (Sari, 2018). To a criminologist, such an account or scenario is useful as it provides a stage to learn new skills. From Jane's perspective and ability, a criminologist can differentiate between who lies and does not lie. Patrick Jane becomes active on each stage, there is a point sociologists can learn from, and those interactive questions earlier said are the base factors to a criminologist.
The information shared by Patrick Jane might matter to a sociologist or criminologist as the base of the conversation. Patrick uses the power of individual data to investigate, and this gives him power or strikes a person in the interview to be engaging. He uses different personal information and what a person likes, such a favorite color to unveil a person trust him. Sociologists and criminologists can also learn it to cover whatever information they may want to explore.
Conclusion
In conclusion, a TV series The Mentalist involves Patrick Jane, who helps CBI investigate numerous crimes as he seeks to discover who murdered his wife and daughter. The research question is about the ethicality of letting a civilian with a conflict of interest in solving crimes to participate in police investigations. The answer to this research question is found in the analysis of the audience's comments on social media. The majority of comments support Patrick's jane move, an indication that it is ethically acceptable.
