Introduction
I am writing this to suggest a resolution to the challenge that is affecting residents in this health facility as well as other surrounding areas. The challenge is that many people are obese and overweight due to the food they take, and most of them never put exercise into consideration every day (Rubin, 2016). Health professionals, senior’s family, along with the facility administrators, are becoming frustrated because they have tried to control this health problem, but they are not successful.
Nutrition Problem
Obesity occurs when an individual carries excess body fat or weight that might have some health effects. A person is suggested by the doctor to have obesity in case of elevated body mass index. Body mass index tool is used by the specialist to determine whether an individual is at a right weight for the sex, height, and age. The measurements combine weight and height. In case an individual has excess weight along with the obesity, this can lead to increased risk of numerous health conditions development like arthritis, cancer, as well as metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome contains a collection of matters such as type 2 diabetes, vascular disease, plus high blood pressure (Rubin, 2016). Upholding a healthy mass or losing via exercise and diet is among the several ways of preventing or reducing weight. Physical activity affects the way the hormones of individual work and hormones affects the way food is processed in the body (World Health Organization, 2020). They are helpful in keeping the echelons of insulin constant since wabbly insulin levels prime to weight gain. These problems should be considered and observe ways of preventing them from preventing future consequences since they have both short- and long-term effects on an individual.
Considering a population of 5000 people in this area, out of the number, the people who have obesity sums to 2000. This shows that there is a problem with their diet, and there are some things that need to be changed for improvement and suitable health. The food that these people takes as well as the physical inactivity leads to this problem, and this may affect the life of various people negatively in future. Putting into consideration the number of the cases the last people were tested for obesity and the current results; it shows that the number is increasing at a high rate and this should be controlled before it becomes worse. The results show that people are consuming more sugary foods and neglecting exercise, while others are overeating.
Obesity has both short- and long-term effects on an individual. When a body chomps more calories compared to what it uses, those calories begin to be converted into fat. Some of the short-term consequences include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and breath shortness during routine or informal activities. These may hinder the body from functioning regularly hence making it hard for an individual to perform the daily activities. Indigestion, as well as digestive problems, may also be as a result of obesity (World Health Organization, 2020). Other consequences include restricted mobility, fatigue, psychological distress, and inflammation and joint pain, particularly in the knees. Also, it may lead to prediabetes where the levels of blood glucose are elevated; nevertheless, not yet to the standards of the diabetic. To females, it may cause infertility along with complications during pregnancy, such as blood clots and gestational diabetes. Excess weight affects all aspects of an individual’s life. The body is always struggling to perform the activities properly, and even as the individual tries to keep the pace of the coworkers, friend or the family, that particular person may feel tired as well as achy since all systems of the body are overworked.
With obesity, force is exerted by excess weight on the knees hence making every skeletal system’s part to bear more weight as compared the weight it is intended to handle. Meanwhile, the individual becomes increasingly remote since the mobility confines the activities one can participate in hence leading to long-term effects. Some of these long-term consequences include diabetes mellitus, stroke, osteoarthritis, incontinence, depression, discrimination along with social isolation, and gall bladder disorder (Rubin, 2016). These are some of the diseases that may make someone to keep on visiting the hospital, and when they become severe, they may even cause death. Pulmonary conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver or steatohepatitis may also result. Some of these diseases may lead to lifespan decrease, and one may spend a large amount of money as he tries to control the disease.
Societal and economic effects are also among the long-term consequences. Obesity, along with its associated health challenges, has a significant financial impact on some countries’ health care system, and this includes direct as well as an indirect cost. Direct medical expenses may count on diagnostic, treatment, as well as preventative services. Indirect expenses relate to condition, along with death and comprise lost output. Productivity dealings encompass workers missing work due to obesity-related health details, decreased productivity when at working environment, and untimely death along with disability.
Some causes of obesity include physical inactivity. Sedentary individuals burn fewer calories as compared to those who are vigorous. The National Health, along with Nutrition Examination Survey, reveals a strong association between physical sedentariness as well as weight gain in males and females. Another cause is overeating, and this causes weight gain, particularly if the IQ of the diet has a lot of fat. Foods high in sugar or fat, such as fast foods, sweets, and fried food contains high energy density. Genetics is another cause of obesity to both children and adults. In case both parents of a person are obese, there is a likelihood of that particular person to develop the condition.
Genetic also has some effects on hormones that are involved in the regulation of fats. Frequency of eating can lead to obesity. The association between eating frequency and weight gain is contentious. There are several intelligences of people who are overweight diet less frequently as compared to people who have normal weight (World Health Organization, 2020). People who consume small foods several times a diurnal have lower echelons of cholesterol and more or lower stable levels of blood sugar than those who consume less often but large mealtimes daily. Small and frequent meals yield unchanging levels of insulin, but large meals cause large insulin sparks after meals.
Medications can also lead to weight gain and obesity. Some of the medicines that are associated with gaining weight comprise particular antidepressant, anticonvulsants, and valproate. Also, some medications for high blood pressure and antihistamines leads to weight gain. Physiological factors, such as emotions are among the causes of weight gain. For some individuals, emotions influence the habit of eating. Several individuals overeat responding to emotions like stress, sadness, anger, or boredom. Another cause of obesity is social issues. Money shortage to buy healthy foods or a shortage of suitable places to walk as well as exercise can lead to increased obesity risks.
Several barriers are associated with the obesity problem. To begin with, the doctor may be lacking knowledge of exercise and nutrition. Not all exercise and foods can solve this problem. If the physicians lack the knowledge and give misleading information to the patient, the treatment may not be effective and may even cause death if the patient keeps on adding weight. Diet, along with exercise, is the guide that most organizations offer to the patients to aid them in achieving a healthy weight (Rubin, 2016). Nevertheless, the guidance often ceases at some point since the clinicians may not be equipped with suitable skills to counsel the health behaviour change.
Furthermore, the physician may create a negative attitude with the obese client, and this may limit that physician from providing quality health care or helpful information on how to control the condition. Alternatively, the patient may become bias against physicians who are overweight and may neglect the advice. This has been a big challenge in treating obese patients because they may ignore the advice given to them (World Health Organization, 2020). Also, patients who have a negative attitude towards the patient may omit some information or medical attention since they have no attraction to the patient. The hospitals discourage these behaviors and make the physicians pay for it in case such as case happens.
Multicultural/Diversity Issues Related to Treating Obesity
Some of the multicultural issues that relate to treating obesity include socioeconomic factors, ethnicity, and race, among others. Under socioeconomics, people who live in high-poverty surroundings have a challenge of accessing suitable foods as well as enough space for exercise. What they can access easily is processed as well as fast foods which are widely available, nutritionally deficient, and low cost. As a result, they are always associated with increasing the prevalence of obesity among people living in that area. People who share the same culture are most likely to experience similar challenges in obesity treatment because in most cases, they consume identical resources. The obesity prevalence is increasing every year among racial groups and all age in various countries.
Ethnic/race variances in lifestyle behaviour as well as economic disadvantage account for some race discrepancy in obesity. As a result, it has been difficult to treat obesity in some areas because of their lifestyle (World Health Organization, 2020). In the regions living with poverty and the breadwinner wants to work to provide the family, some of them go for packed as well as first foods which are faster to consume compared to sparing time to prepare meals with low calories. Preserved along with prepared foods have high calories, a lot of fats, and some are sugary hence causing obesity after conception.
Existing Programs
There are various programs, institutions, and resources available for promoting control of obesity. Some of the programs include Agriculture as well as Food Research Initiative, Regional Nutrition Education, along with Prevention Excellence Centers and nutritional programs, among others. Some of the resources include Obesity Education Initiatives, Measure Registry, Nutrition Policy Center and Promotion, and MyPlate.
These programs and resources have both strengths and limitations, but they are helpful to those who observe their guidance. On the side of strength, they help people to acquire good health. These programs offer education to all people, whether infected or affected people to gain knowledge on what to do to prevent as well as recover from obesity. They offer training on the foods that people should take as well as the exercise that is affecting obesity cure as well as prevention. Many people who have obesity problem prefer joining these programs for faster effects. Also, they have enough as well as ready medicines for obesity treatment (World Health Organization, 2020). In some hospitals, the medication as well as the treatment guide may be missing, but this is not the case with the program groups. They ensure the patient acquire the right medicine as well as guidance for the treatment.
