Introduction
Crime rates in cities and major urban were at a high rate in the past years and even though they have greatly reduced in the recent past, there is still instances of nefarious activities going on. The police department in various major cities and towns have had a hard time dealing with the crime cases, their preparation and improved technology notwithstanding. Among the crimes witnessed in the past and that is still witnessed in the modern world include rape which is meted to unsuspecting individuals (Wilson, & Petersilia, 2010). The forced sexual encounter leaves the victims mentally unstable and may contract diseases which may be catastrophic. Both the male and female gender go through the ordeal but there are more cases related to female victims. Sexual crimes are not limited to rape alone as there are other sexual crimes such as child pornography and sexual exploitation. Robbery too is another crime that has been witnessed since the past century and has not stopped. Robberies have even become more advanced as compared to the past thanks to technology. Robbers now use guns which can be procured easily as compared to the past years where they used not so deadly weapons and guns were so hard to acquire. Other types of crimes include grand larceny auto, petit larceny, burglary which involves breaking into peoples’ property amongst others. In this paper, I want to analyze the compstat from the Police Department City of New York regarding crime rates in 34 Precinct. The focus will be on burglary and grand larceny auto, what the major causes are and a plan on how to minimize the cases reported.
The report is from the police department city of New York and contains crime rates in 34th Precinct covering the week 4/27/2020/ through 5/3/2020. The report is Volume 27 and Number 18 and contains the crime complaints from week to date, year to date and the percentage change in the rates reported. The report also has historical perspective, which consists of a complete calendar year of data. The crimes reported include murder, robbery, rape, grand larceny, grand larceny auto, burglary, felonious assault, transit crimes, housing, petit larceny, misdemeanor assault, UCR rape, shooting incs and vics (Rosenfeld & Fornango, 2014).
The crime rates of murder and rape reported in that week was zero but there was about three and six cases reported in the weeks before. In 2019, there was one murder and six rape cases reported making the change in percentage to be 100 and -33.3 percentage respectively. The robbery cases reported were three, and two in 2019. The change in percentage was 50. The cases of felonious assault reported was one which was a 50% drop from the ones reported in 2019. Burglary cases increased slightly from one in 2019 to four in that week in 2020. The change represented a 300% increase. Grand larceny reduced from thirteen in 2019 to five in 2020, a 61.5% drop while grand larceny auto increased from zero cases to four in 2020.
The historical perspective on the other hand gives the trend of the cases from 1990. The total number of the cases reported in 1990 were at 10, 027 cases, 7225 cases in 1993, 2204 cases in 1998 and 1699 cases in 2001. The trend shows that the cases have been dropping in general from the past years. However, there are still some cases being reported and the street is not safe. More needs to be done to clear the cases completely.
Burglary in 34th Precinct
There are numerous cases of burglary in the locality of 34th Precinct. The recorded of New York Police Department have records of the cases reported to them so far by their residents. The NYPD are looking for a suspect that was reported to have unlawfully entered an apartment in 157 Vermilyea Avenue on the 10th of April. He used the 5th floor fire escape window and went away with 50 inch television without the permission of the authority. They are asking the public that if anyone comes across him or has any information to report to them. The NYPD are also looking for suspect for the burglary that happened on 9th April at about 2:30 AM inside of 265 Cabrini Boulevard. The burglar gained access to the storage room and went away with tools and equipment.
The crime cases are high with there being a lot of burglary reports and claims. The police are urging the people to report the cases and be more vigilant with anyone seen to engage in the activities. There has been more calls made to the NYPD to deal with suspects of crime and people who break into other people’s properties. Grand larceny on the other hand too has been witnessed where people and owners of the properties have been found casualties after dealing with the burglars who came for their property. The criminals end up using violence to get what they came for in the house of the owners of the property. The casualties end up dead and a great loss to their families and their loved ones.
Two Causes of Crime in 34 Precinct Street in New York
Crimes in the society has been caused by several causes including loud music, construction, prostitution, pollution, traffic, pot holes ,loneliness and dirty dark streets. Despite many efforts and resources put in police, crimes has been increasing time after time. Many police departments have tried tirelessly in the recent years by making it more difficult for the crimes to be committed. Some of these methods are situational while others are environmental. Street 34 precinct is not an exceptional (Ellen, et al., 2013). This methods can be applied and have the same effect as they have had in several other places in the world. The methods cannot work out efficiently unless we look at the causes of these crimes we want to prevent. This will make it easier for the police to prevent these crimes. Here should be some consistent causes that causes a higher percentage of crimes. There are some personal reasons that lead to individuals going against the law despite of the consequences .for a long time; people have focused their efforts in determining the causes of abnormal conduct among the people. The history is long and dates back to the old Babylon. Some personal reasons for crime commitment include revenge, anger, jealousy and pride. Other causes are not personal but are mainly environmental. These environmental causes are easy to curb. These therefore leaves us with the option of mainly focusing on the environmental factors rather than personal reasons. Some people may consider a criminal life as better life than a law-abiding life. Below are two causes discussed in broader perspective, that is, loneliness and dirty streets.
Loneliness as a Cause of Crime
Loneliness is one of the main causes of the crimes in the society. This is mostly among the elder members of the society, though young people may also found themselves lonely. Mostly, loneliness has never been associated with crimes, but looking at it 0on the other perspective, sometimes loneliness may lead to criminal activities among the people of the public. The main reason for discussing this is to find how it relates to crimes and find a way of curbing it in order to reduce the rate of crime commitment. Solitude, in most cases, is seen as important for development of human character but sometimes, idleness and loneliness can lead to commitment of the crimes. Loneliness is mainly caused by lack of meaningful company and isolation of an individual. Loneliness is widespread and it cannot be ignored when discussing crime causes in 34 precinct in the New York City. Idleness is mainly associated with poverty, since lonely people are likely to lack a stable i9ncome source. This may lead to the lonely people seeking for easy ways of earning the income, which may even lead them crimes. Loneliness can also lead to people being vulnerable to scams, as a result of making conversation with the other person may lead to them opening doors to strangers. The police should discourage loneliness especially during odd hours by arresting the individuals who are found lonely in especially night hours. This may discourage criminal activities in these areas.
Dirty Streets as a Cause of Crime
Dirty streets is another significant cause of crimes in the street. The desolate, overturned dumpster and poorly lit streets are associated with high crime rates. The reasons for keeping the street clean are mainly to avoid disease infection. However, crimes are mostly associated with disorderliness, which tends to be caused by dirt. In some way, keeping the street clean may reduce the rates of crime commitment. Low levels of hygiene is mainly associated with increased social disorder and low-level crime increase. The social disorder encourages harbor of the criminals. The police may also find it difficult to patrol due to dirt. This further increases the rate of crime in the street. In the contrary, clean, well-lit and orderly streets discourages violent crimes. Removal of garbage is one of the big strategy called crime prevention by environmental design. It is based in Canada and seeks to reduce the chances of crime commitment. This works in recovering of the ownership of public spaces and is concerned with improving urban spaces instead of employing other hard tactics. Research also shows that people tend to be more violent and disobedient in a dirty environment than in a clean environment. This environment may be contained with dirt and graffiti
