Prisons have increasingly become unsafe for both the inmates and prison workers. The cases of stubbing have risen with inmates getting access to knives and using them to stab fellow inmates or prison workers. Depending on the size of the prisons these cases vary with big prisons, being most affected. These stabs hurt inmates and officers and to a larger extent cause death to these innocent individuals. In 2016, there were five murders, and the number rose to twelve in 2017. In the two years, approximately 250 inmates got hospital treatment for injuries gotten from stabbing (Sifakis, 227). This year in April, seven inmates were killed, and seventeen injured through stabbing in prison at South Carolina. Therefore stabbing is a serious problem that needs to be addressed and solved.
Prisons are places where federal crime is punished and efforts made to rectify the inmates so that they can get back to the society. Some convicts in prison have committed minor crimes, which puts them there for a short period. Therefore, prisons should be safe places for the inmates and should not be allowed to be dangerous places for meeting their deaths. The government should invent strategies that make prisons safe places and reduce death and injury cases. Prisoners are citizens with the right to life, and the authorities have a responsibility in protecting this right (Boston & Manville, 771). Making prisons safe makes people confident about government intentions with prisoners and ensures maximum safety and security of the inmates as they serve their sentence. Inmate protection and safety ensures strong reprimand and reduces emotional distress in the inmate relatives. It is also critical in reducing rates of crime in prisons.
The stabbing can be prevented by controlling the entry of dangerous metals into the prisons. However, it is a difficult task as some prisoners have the skill to make knives, which they use. Therefore, the use of stab resistant vests in the prisons is the best and most viable strategy for solving this problem. These vests will protect the inmates from stabs, as they do not allow knives or other materials to penetrate (Reilly, 126). When inmates use these vests, their fellows with the intention of stabbing others will be discouraged, as they know it would be difficult to penetrate. The stabbing cases will be reduced due to this discouragement. These vests will increase prison safety and reduce the rising cases of stabbing in prisons today. The introduction of stab-proof vests will help increase prison safety and protect the lives of prospective victims.
Conclusion
The solution may receive objections from people who believe that inmates are criminals and it will be expensive to acquire stab resistant vests. Although inmates are held for committing crimes, they are deprived of some freedoms such as movement, but they still have the right to life (Boston & Manville, 773). Their lives should be protected and not condemned to die in the prisons. Even though it is expensive to purchase the vest for a large number of prisoners, the value cannot be compared to the lives of these inmates. The prisoners can be given tasks that will compensate for the cost of these vests.
The government should think about its duty to protect the lives of every citizen. It should take immediate action to ensure that prisoners are safe. Purchasing stab-proof vests is the best solution, and the government is in a better position as it has bargaining powers. The expenses can be compensated by giving inmates some tasks to accomplish. Immediate action is important to change the prison environment.
