The Department of energy in the United States is one of the largest sectors in the country and, thus, requires a project-based approach to meeting and achieving its targets (Kerzner, H. 2018). In 2010, the government conducted a reorganization of the department, coming up with new teams around functions and divisions of the energy sector (Englund, R. and Graham, R. 2019). Hence, the office of the project manager became increasingly essential to coordinate all the tasks taking place within the department. A project-based approach ensures that the processes of setting goals, managing stakeholder expectations, and quantifying the progress made go accordingly to completion. The staff in the department, being many, require a project manager to schedule tasks and ensure that everything is going according to schedule in the service and project delivery. Thus, the office of the project manager is of utmost significance in the energy information administration and any other departments that deal with energy.

In describing the role of a project manager, it is essential to understand the role of project management as a strategic element inside organizations and departments such as energy information administration. Before developing a project management office, the USA Department of energy realized that the various sectors within the department and the employees were not in harmony with the overall goals of the sector and thus, needed a model to schedule tasks accordingly, hence, the move to create a project management office (Englund, R. and Graham, R. 2019). The role of project management is to develop, implement, and enforce a more effective and rigorous project management governance framework, which will bring about discipline and performance consistency within the department. When the employees in the department know their roles in the various sectors, they can then perform their work in a bid to try and score highly in performance appraisals. The project management office enhances the department’s activities through thorough scheduling and follows up of the various sectors by ensuring that the employees do their work as they ought to. As captured in the preceding sentences, the presence of a project management office streamlines the work of the department through scheduling of tasks to meet an objective. The office of the project manager is a strategic element inside organizations that care about their performance in meeting the set goals and objectives by describing the need for a project-based approach inside organizations, understanding the roles of project management, and assessing the roles of the project manager.

A project manager has a myriad of roles and responsibilities which ensure that the project management office runs as it ought to. One of the roles of a project manager is to play a lead in planning for the department’s tasks and responsibilities (Anbari, F. 2018). Panning entails compiling all the relevant information and material needed to complete a task in the right manner (). The project manager thus leads the department in setting up goals and objectives required to complete the mission and vision of the organization successfully. The other role of the project manager is to execute and monitor the progress of the goals set in the planning stage. For instance, if the energy information sector planned to move all their systems online within three months, the project manager and the relevant staff will lead the employees in the migration process by checking against the set timelines and activities to enhance cooperation and adherence to the timelines set. Furthermore, the project manager is tasked with monitoring and closing of the set project (Rai, et al. 2017). In the case of migration of the department’s systems online, the project manager will ensure that the appropriate steps are in place to ensure that the energy information systems are all online by monitoring the various aspects of the project. Therefore, the project manager plays a central role in ensuring that the set goals and objectives are in line with the company’s mission and vision.

The final part of project management is to identify a way of selecting, developing, planning, scheduling, and measuring the outcomes and risks of the project. A way of doing all the tasks as mentioned above is by taking the objectives of the organization and structuring them against the required framework that will enhance the attainment of the requirements of the company (Rai, et al. 2017). For instance, the project manager could analyze all the related tasks that will enhance the migration of the department’s systems to the digital format and then schedule the relevant sections within the department that will be instrumental in the move. Doing so will ensure that the project meets its objectives and adhere to project management ideals of conducting a systematic approach to any task. The office of the project manager will, therefore, coordinate all the relevant tasks to ensure the success of the project.

The office of the project manager is essential in any organization as it ensures that the performance of the various sectors matches the overall objectives of the company. A project-based approach ensures that the department achieves the set targets within the set timelines. As captured in the preceding paragraphs, the roles of a project manager come in handy in ensuring that the organization is strategic in its activities.
