With the growth of technology, social media has become the nerve center for communication as well as a primary platform used by the politician to address the compact majority in India. Similarly, the growth of this platform has intensively grown due to the increasing demand for information. However, despite the growth of this platform in the Asian fraternity, the shift of social media has explicitly drifted from its original scale of information and creating of new friendship zone to a war practicing platform. Never the less, this has created fear to the Indian public as leaders, and the mass missuses the platform due to the freedom of expression supported by the nation's constitution. This paper seeks to dive deep on focusing on the laid regulations by the Indian government regarding the use of social media in the country.
As Sambhav (2018) concludes, social media has been one of the infrastructure breading terrorist activities, which has targeted the mass audience. As a result, the group uses the platform without the public's awareness of staging and executing their evil acts. Through this, the Indian government has extensively developed a set of conduct regarding the use of social media in regulating the risks of terror attacks that would cost the nation's economy to stumble. The government in conjunction with the cybersecurity agencies has launched an awareness campaign that alerts all the social media users on the do's and does not policies within the nation.
With the extensive use of social media in the nation, Twitter has become one of the significant and highly used political airing platforms that Indian politicians have used to speak out their thoughts and principles. Due to its flexibility and reliability, users have extremely aired their view without considering the scope of their discussion. Sushma Swaraj, a former supreme court lawyer, and an Indian politician is famously known for her thrilling tweets that have emanated different public opinion. However, as part of the new reforms on the social media Act in the nation, the government has cautiously approached the matter by spreading hate speech as one of the offenses irrespective of one's position in the country. As a result, this aims to filter the evil on the platform, creating a friendly environment and a healthy social media in the industrious nation.
Shifting away from politics, the overgrowing pornographic sites due to the ease of earning money on the platform has been one of the challenges facing the nation (Debu, 2013). Due to the thrilling factors that allow young individuals on participating on the pornographic agenda, this has come to the attention of the Indian government and the need to regulate the site has been on the move. Since the beginning of 2008, the Indian government has been on the horizon of fighting pornography on the internet. However, with the daily increase of different social media platform in the nation, the government has issued new rules on filtering different search engines in the state. Through this, the government has kept track of all traffic on different pornographic sites as a way or denying access to the underage. Never the less, the government has also burned any postings of naked images on social media as a way of curbing the situation. Never the less, the Indian government has strengthened its action by shutting down accounts of members who do not comply with the rules.
On the other hand, through the use of packets monitoring systems, the Indian government does not have a policy protecting the privacy of its citizens, something that has made it possible for monitoring activities on the social media as a way of ensuring national security to the public.
The Indian government in conjunction with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has put measures in place restricting the spread of victims of any national disaster on the social media. Through this, the government aims at reducing the risk of panic as well as the unnecessary exaggeration of the situation as a way of lowering the fear. More so, cyberbullying has been one of the significant regulations on social media use in India.
Nearly more than 5% of the daily social media users have been once victims of a cyberbully with the highest number, in this case, being the female user. As a result, this has triggered the Indian government, through the use of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to help fight the increasing brutality of bullies on the internet. The ministry has put measures in place to ensure that all users participating in cyberbullying are brought before justice.
Conclusion
In a world, where mobile and social media are growing tremendously, it is hard to accept the bitter truth that the social media world is enormously increasing and so does the threat of misusing the platform. As a result, the Indian government should work in collaboration with all the stockholders to ensure that the government wins against the daily growing misuse of the platform.
