Introduction
There are different instances in the US, where both public and private security officers have been charged for various crimes. Such instances include two traffic police officers who were charged in America for sexual assault women while on duty. The prosecution accused the police officers of stopping the women on account of inspection and ended up sexually assaulting them (McLaughlin, 2018). The two police officers pleaded not guilty. The victims accused the police officers of intimidating them to stop them from getting justice. The women feared the intimidation where they were threatened by getting shot. The two police officers were charged with four hundred counts of sexual assault that happened between 2005 and 2013.
Sexual assault is criminal not only to the police officers but also to the general public. The police have a code of conduct of how they are supposed to carry themselves while on duty. The women testified on how they were sexually assaulted by the police officers and how they used to get intimidations through threats over the years from the two police officers (McLaughlin, 2018). The two police officers were found guilty of the sexual assault offenses and jailed. Police assault in America has been rising over the years, were police officers are charged for committing various crimes, including killing innocent people.
Private security personnel is also liable for the crimes they commit while on duty. Private security officers are hired to perform specific tasks ad they have an obligation to follow the law while performing their roles (Roper & Joseph, 2019). The law requires private security officers to collaborate with the police and other security officers while performing their duties. Mohammad Khan, a private security officer, was charged in Boston for punching an eleven-year-old girl he caught shoplifting in a mall the guard was guarding. The act was a violation of the laws guiding private security officers on how they are supposed to follow the law in apprehending suspects.
The Jury of Suffolk County in Massachusetts handed down the charges against the charges by the prosecution of excessive and unreasonable force to detain the girl. The Jury argued that Khan reacted to the situation where there was the risk of the girl escaping with the stolen items (Roper & Joseph, 2019). The prosecution lacked the merits of the assault on the fact that the girl was caught on the act, and she had pleaded guilty for shoplifting clothes. The decision to plead guilty for shoplifting influenced the outcome of assault charges of the private security officer.
