In the story A and P, the narrator seems to be a young man who is curious about what goes around him. The curiosity is manifested by the actions that he undertakes in the presence of new customers that fully capture his attention to compromise his normal functioning. Regarding the context of the story and the characters that have been used to bring out the message, the story can be modernized and conveniently applied to current times attribute to some changes that should be employed to the paper.
Some of the changes have to be made. Some of the changes include the elimination of chivalry in a bid to win a girl's heart. It is because actions related to chivalry in the modern world are deemed obsolete and rarely subscribed to by women. It is important to express romantic gestures in the century to please women. However, due to the evolution that the society has undergone and experiences, rebellion against the public for such a personal interest no longer works. The above is depicted when the narrator's efforts to impress the girl of his desire fail even without any advancements of confirming his interests to her.
Chivalry has become counterproductive as a form of romantic gesture. It is supported by the fact that the female gender has become more liberal-minded and can protect themselves without necessarily requiring a man's efforts. It is manifested in the story when the lady walks out of the grocery place without recognizing the narrator's efforts to wade off the shame that she faced from the management's approach to her dressing code.
Secondly, risking to take sides against the authority and the society at the large courtesy of compromising the society's current code of ethics should be changed. It is because society's guiding principles are meant to protect the majority of the people from falling victim to destruction and things that can harm them. The above is important despite the civilization and modernity that come with the current century, especially Western cultures. A good example is when the three ladies storm the grocery in their form of clothing.
Being a public place that requires a decent form of dressing, people are left to wonder. The manager takes the task to poke the ladies' eyes with a stick, and they feel embarrassed. With the right dressing at the grocery, the girls would have comfortably accomplished their tasks without alarm. Going against the authority ends up costing the narrator his job because of a little ignorance. He does not derive any benefits from his so-termed heroic take that is pegged on his interests. Both he and the girls feel ashamed at long last.
Conclusion
Lastly, the paper would consider the decision made by the narrator to easily remove his apron at the workplace and quit his job. In the modern days, people are protective of their jobs instead of sacrificing for things that overshadow higher benefits. The above is portrayed by the narrator's workmate, who maintains his composure despite also seeing the girls come in. The story would perfectly work if the narrator had considered being realistically romantic instead of chivalry, which could only be applied in previous centuries. If the narrator had taken into account his job security and reasoned towards the ethics of society concerning the situation, it would have also worked.
