Introduction
In my legislative trip, I visited Commissioner Vincent Morales, Jr. office located in 517 Eugene Heimann Circle Suite 300 in Richmond, Fort Bend County. He is the former Rosenberg mayor, businessman, and long-time resident of Fort Bent County. He has been serving the American citizens by devoting most of his time in office particularly by preparing the city for the future. He was elected in 2016, as the commissioner of Fort Bend County court for Precinct 1 making this his first time to sit for such an office (Jones, 2017). Commissioner Morales Jr., as a businessman, he is competent in managing organizations efficiently and effectively. Additionally, as an entrepreneur, he acknowledges the cost of perseverance, optimism, and hard work. While equipped with this knowledge and skills, he acknowledges the major challenge facing population living in Richmond area in Fort Bend County.
I visited the office of commissioner Morales on February 21st, 2018. In attendance, was only the commissioner and I. The major role of the commissioner is to work together with the county judge to take part in all works and making decisions of the court. They work together to pass county budget. As the commissioner, he is responsible for approving the county level of employment and oversees the amount of funding required by the county offices to execute their roles and responsibilities (Haberl et al., 2018). Additionally, together with commissioner's court, they determine the property tax rate of the county. Commissioner also have the power to offer tax abatements for economic growth in county's name (Hebert & Judge, 2014).
The primary issue discussed in the meeting was the major challenges facing Richmond population and the most appropriate approaches to solve them. I initiated the conversation after introducing myself to the governor and requesting for his time to have a twenty-minute dialogue with him. I presented this issues as a question where the commissioner responded with a lot of confidence. He stressed the major issues facing Fort Bend County particularly Richmond that are not present in other counties. They included unemployment, inadequate water supply, flooding, and lack of proper infrastructure among others (Hawken, 2016). He stated these problems required a fighter and an advocate in the Court of the commission who comprehends how to make things executed. He stressed a need for a commissioner who can acquire resources that Richmond area requires to solve its distinct challenges (Jones, 2017).
The major things discussed in the meeting were the qualifications that Morales Jr. could bring as a commissioner in Precinct 1. He stated that during his office, he has concentrated on stressing the economic growth to stir employment creation, strengthen the infrastructure in the city, and creation of a sustainable, viable tax basis to stabilize taxes. With the aid of other commissioners in the court, he said that he desires to create over six hundred employment opportunities, oversee the development of various rights of way, and show the path to expand Fort Bend Campus. The extension of the campus he emphasized will see that there are technically trained professions available. He also said that in his public service, his major goals are to introduce a prosperous landscape corporation in Fort Bend County which would help solve the issue of lack of employment.
The impression received from this meeting demonstrates that Commissioner Morales Jr. is entirely determined to ensure that Fort Bend County residents live a comfortable lifestyle. This is particularly when it comes to the topic of challenges facing these population. I also learned from a social perspective of what it entails to be a commissioner and being able to perform efficiently. It is not about a matter of education, but one must have adequate experience working with different people in various sectors just as Commissioner Morales Jr. who worked both as businessman and entrepreneur. Furthermore, this lesson helped me identify that the commissioner did not discriminate against the Latino, Hispanics, and other communities living in Fort Bend County. This is because he desired to give them equal opportunities as the county natives.
Conclusion
The meeting with Commissioner Morales Jr. provided significant insight into the crucial challenges facing Fort Bend County residents. It was evident that he acknowledged the problems and is determined to solve them by positively influencing his office. Therefore, to ensure that such challenges are eradicated, he suggested the need to often elect individuals to commissioner's office who understand how to get things done. This would enable them to acquire required resources to make the county's lifestyle more comfortable.
