Hispanic people treat different people differently according to age, gender, and social position in society. The rich people who often are of the ruling class are referred to as Senor, which can mean sir or elevating them. Women, children, and the poor are, however, treated differently. In most cases, the ruling class men would be treated fairly and respected and honored everywhere, while there would be no respect for the poor people. For example, in the story, "The Cane," When Damiao arrives at the house of Senor Jaoa Carneiro, all the girls who try to stare at him are ordered to go back to what they were doing. Sinha Rita orders a boy, who is described as a slave boy, to find Senor Jaoa where he would be. Lucerita is an example of how the poor are treated by the ruling men when she prepares for punishment because of looking at Damiao, evidenced in “The little girl lowered her head to avoid the blow" (Machado de Assis & Gledson). The rich people are also known to be fierce and are therefore feared evidence in words, "but when it suited her, as fearsome as the devil himself” (Machado de Assis & Gledson). Women, children, and the poor society are bound to obey and go by what the wealthy tell them.
The Story, “The Cane” has taught me that making tough decisions may require a sacrifice of something that may be dear to us, or we desire to achieve. It tells of how Damiao escaped from seminary, which his father had forced him into. According to Damiao, he thought that the seminary was not the right place for him. However, it was impossible to go back to his father. Dismayed, Damiao has to look for a different place to stay in without his father knowing. He, therefore, resorts to go to his godfather, Senor Jaoa Carneiro. Damiao had to make a tough decision to leave the seminary, and the consequence was that he would not go home, and he had to look for a place he was going to stay. Another thing that the decision cost was his empathy for Luceritia. He had to forego protecting her from Sinha Rita because Sinha Rita was the only one who could help him at the moment since his godfather was gone.
The literary text The Cane gave me to understand the culture of Brazil. It is a parent that most homes are run by women like men responsible for running a business and other commercial activities. Girls and women have the obligation of things like netting and weaving. Sinha Rita teaches some five girls from the neighborhood how to stitch on the fabric. The culture is also religious, as can be seen, that Damiao ran from the seminary, and Sinha Rita exclaims, “Holy name of Jesus." The culture is paranormal, and men are the ones who run things. Damiao is so afraid of his father, who might chase him away for fleeing from the seminary. Women have no say because Damiao may have resorted o go home and ask him, mother, to allow him back. The cure is somehow racists, as Lucerita is black and seems to be going through a difficult time. She is sick, coughing, cold, and very tiny, yet Sinha Rita beats her, as evident in words "Lucretia would get the usual punishment." Young boys are the ones who work as servants, especially in wealthy families.
In my opinion, the writers from central and South America and Asia wrote literature that contained supernatural elements to depict what was happening in their lives at the moment, in the form of satire. Most of the works described what was happening to me the political world and its impact on the life of the average person. During this time, power was essential in the regions, and people feared political individuals. Therefore, literature would not be written in a way that would directly point to an event or a political thing s it puts the life of the writer in danger. Therefore, the writers had to use magic fiction and other forms of literature to write their ideas. It was also a way of moving from reality and exploring different areas within the human mind to make life more bearable for individuals, as life was hard at the time. The escape from the painful reality evident in words “there is no pain as great as being alive" (Dario). Therefore it was for the reader to understand their existence and hope for is a better world that existed only in magic and fiction.
The Book "The Perforated Sheet" is a perfect example of contradictions and suffering in human life. Saleem Sinai is born the very same day their country gains independence. The things that this was a significant thing and that he had a big role in society. He, however, only lives for thirty years, with most of the things he thought he would achieve in him. He tells of the fates of his grandfather, Aziz, who goes to Germany to study medicine and has come to stay. Aziz’s father falls sick while he is away, and when he comes back to the village, he has an obligation of taking care of his family and the town. The town is, however, rooted in deep tradition, and Aziz finds it hard helping out. For example, Ghani's daughter falls sick, yet women are still covering her as Aziz could not see her body. However, he cannot be able to examine her nakedly. Saleem's life and suffering can be seen in what her grandfather foes through and the things which he expected to achieve but did not.
Studying the world indeed means studying literature. It is most effectively done through studying the history books that were written. The plot, themes, and even language use of most writing are written, illustrating the author's experiences in life or things they have observed in society. Therefore to understand the things that happened in the world or things that occur in other areas of the world, it is essential to read their literature. For example, most of the books written by Isabel Allende is about her life experiences. The writers also refer to the works that had been done by other people who came before them, either complimenting or criticizing. For example, the practices of Carlos Fuentes were based on reality and were done fantastically. It depicted the Mexican society bitterly and also encouraged national identity. Cinematography marked his works, showing many interior monologues, flashbacks, and language, which indicate that he must have borrowed from the non-Spanish literature. Ruben Dario writes severely parties which varied in meaning. The "Blazon," for example, is based on religion, and the world believed in different places. Words like “... the handle of Greek amphora would enable readers to understand the nature of the tool that the Greeks have (Dario). The works of Pablo Neruda, which are based on Spanish origins, would allow readers to follow Spain's world more clearly through the literature.
Several themes are similar in most of the texts. Particular items, politics, and love were the most common in most of the books. For example, Maria Machado de Asis exploded romantic tradition in most of his stories, novels, and poems (Encyclopaedia Britannica). He wrote “Dom Casmurro” whose theme is based on love and jealousy due to suspected adultery. Isabel Allende explored magic and fantasy, depicting her homeland Chile and Latin America together with the land's politics. The works of Reuben Dario were mainly on love, adventure, and heroism. These three authors did many works which brought out the themes of love and politics in their different surrounding environment. For most of them, their writings were involved by the kind of jobs that they did and the nature of the lifestyles that they lived in. Dario, in his poem "Fatality," for example, explains the pain of life. He writes, “the hard rock is happier still, and feels nothing" (Dario). From his world, life is a painful thing. The same thing is seen with Allende, whose life is filled with terror from her uncle's assassination and ends up writing most of her work in fiction, fantasy, and magic, in fear of being followed up.
