Introduction
Hebrews 13 verses four to seven mostly deals with the issue of marriage and covetousness as spelled in the bible together with leadership and how individuals should imitate them particularly in ensuring that they can avoid engaging in acts of lust, which are most evident in covetousness. The first two verses deal with the issue of marriage where people should not defile the marriage bed where the males and females involved should not engage in sex before they get married. As such, people should be pure and not engage in sex before marriage. The other verses from six to seven further deal with the issue of covetousness and trusting in God to help in meeting our needs and not being covetous. Moreover, the seventh verse deals with the issue of honoring authority by remembering them.
Interpretation
Verse further points to the honor that men should put on marriage where it. In first Corinthians, the issue of lusting is dealt with where men should have their wives and thus keep the marriage bed undefiled. Undefiled in this case is a predicate according to the Greek text. In verse, adulterers and whoremongers will face judgment even though human beings may not know of their acts. Verse five deals with conversation mainly considering the lover of wealth and lust that is most evident in the covetousness noted in verse.
Moreover, the verse guarantees that God will not forsake those who trust in him. In the Bible Joshua, Solomon and Jacob are promised the same. In verse six there is a need to remember the teachers in playing their role in the building of faith particularly considering how they labored among the people. Moreover, verse seven further focusses on the conversation of those who taught. As such, they should note on how their teachers lived to the end even though they faced tough times mainly through being martyrs. As such, the steadfastness of their faith and the way they lived should be a lesson that their followers should follow and not give up. Stephen and James in this regard faced martyrdom (Acts 12.2). As such, the three verses focus on the issue of marriage and purity together with aping the life of those ruling over them.
Application
The first verse regarding marriage is mostly applied in counseling. People should live their lives by avoiding adultery or fornication thus ensuring that the marriage remains undefiled. The advice, in this case, is that of dealing with unions particularly in those who are about to get married. Moreover, there is a need to consider the issue of teachings that will guide in upholding themselves and ensuring that they do not defile themselves before marriage. The problem of covetousness can further be applied to living particularly where people are quite lustful in amassing more wealth instead of focusing on their faith and their walk. As such, people should not enter into lustful ventures particularly those of engaging in fornication but should concentrate on building their Christian walk by avoiding sins that entangle them. The verse can further be applied in our lives particularly regarding how we should live as Christians. It is essential to take into consideration the lives they have lived to guide us in successfully living our faith. The seventh verse brings into perspective the issue of endurance in the Christian life. Encouraging is paramount as the verse says that God will never forsake his people.
