Introduction
The film "Granny's Got Game," directed by Angela Alford, is a roster of basketball players in their seventies, making fiercely women competitive teams as they face social stigma, cut-throat competition, and physical limitation to continue with what they love. The film is heartwarming where it uplifts tales and obstacles that old-age bring to individuals, but at the same time authenticate that a game is something unique that can be embraced even at older ages ("Kanopy"). The ladies have the passion of the game, and in the sense that they played basketball at the time, most women will not engage in sporting activities. Despite the obstacles they endured at a tender age, such as no women sport at the high school level, the women have created a bigger basketball family, even older age.
The film brings a different version of old age. The audience will understand that even at an older age, they should never surrender. In essence, a person is expected to go for whatever they want in life and what they are passionate about without listening to negativity from others. The women are not only enjoyable to watch, but also inspiring to hear (Marshall 74). Despite their age, older women can showcase their talent amidst a high level of competition marred with tumble and rough play.
Stereotype and Elderly
Just like racial and gender, older adults face various stereotypes such as their love of children, health freak, inability to see, drinking decay coffee, and slow driving. The population of elderly adults tends to rise as people tend to live longer. If the population rise, older adults are more likely to face any discrimination. Currently, there are a lot of myths associated with older individuals. In most instances, people have been forced to believe that being young is a good experience than being old. In reality, younger families have left the older generation to live separately, making them fulfill the myth. However, stereotyping and myths impact the way people associated and treat older people. Ideally, people are encouraged to stay close to the aging generation to understand them and expel the narrative. Stereotyping and discrimination are typically not challenged and unnoticeable. The only places that they can be seen are when they are spotlighted in the social media platform and sports.
In some cultures, the older generation is portrayed as a symbol of knowledge and wisdom. With the rise of the population in the United States, older adults are perceived differently. In American, if aging is discussed, people think about death, nursing homes, and the decline of health. In most instances, people can hardly think about anything positive about aging. In the past, the world considered elderly persons as gifts and virtues; today, they are deemed as a lurid and a burden thought in people's minds (Marshall 77). The stereotype of ageist can be fueled in different forms, but the older adults are the main target based on prejudice and false assumptions. However, the development of the United States considers the stereotype of aging in both negative and positive ways. Most people have engaged in stereotyping elderly as either difficult to manage or slow. In essence, society is acceptable behavior by supporting the victims.
In the film "Granny's Got Game," the director tries to break the negative stereotype associated with elderly people. The film breaks the notion that women are generally slow at older by displaying women who are passionate about playing basketball amidst the tense physical requirement. The women have established a big family where they care for one another. The women playing basketball teach people about self-discipline and life. The women are hardly affected by the spectators, but their minds are free from the game. The basketball players teach the audience on how older adults can make their body stay fit for the game. The basket courts act as the second home to these women, where they go not only to enjoy but to express themselves and escape many stereotypes in the family. The women against all the odds play basketball even when women could hardly participate in games.
The film tends to change people's perceptions about the aging of society. Instead of seeing the older generation as mournful, debilitated, weak, grumpy, irritable, and boring, people can see them as enjoyable to watch and good entertainers. The film also fights against early retirement that is given to the older generation. In a society where older adults are barred from participating in any brainstorming activities like creative thinking, the film tends to create a better version. Discrimination against older employees and sportspeople can be absorbed as a self-fulfilling prediction in stereotype risk that can contribute to a drop in performance and output. In most instances, the older sportsmen and employees can be disappointed by the result.
In terms of health conditions, the older generation has faced a lot of discrimination. For instance, if there is insufficient medication, health care providers tend to care about the younger generation as compared to older patients. The assumption used by most health care providers is that older patients are physically weak with deteriorating health making them rely on others to care for them. The film tends to end these stereotypes that the older generation can still be effective and useful at any competitive level.
This film is recommended that people should be aware of implicit biases associated with aging stereotype. Most of the stereotypes associated with aging are unexamined and automatic (Marshall 73). People need to replace stereotypes with a positive view of aging. People should embrace new things such as seeing the older generation as people who have vast experience in most things in society. People need to switch perspective by realizing that even the younger generation cam become older at later stages. Thus, they should maintain contact with the older generation. There is a need for people to treat older women with a disability with greater care.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the film "Granny's Got Game" brings a different version of old age. The audience will understand that even at an older age, they should never surrender. In essence, a person is expected to go for whatever they want to live and what they are passionate about without listening to negativity from others.
