Introduction
The dissertation chair has many roles and responsibilities throughout the graduate student's formulation of the research proposal to the defense of the proposal and publication of the final dissertation. First, a dissertation chair is tasked with advising the doctoral candidate from the development of the prospectus to the final stage of the dissertation- defense of the dissertation (Chasan-Taber, 2014; The University of Tennessee, 2019; Twale, 2015; Twale, 2015). It is worth noting that the dissertation chair is a specialized faculty member or an expert in the topic of interest to the candidate, hence capable of adequately guiding the candidate through all the stages of the dissertation process (Hecht, 2014; Scheg & Shaw, 2018). Second, a dissertation chair guides the candidate through the process of selecting the dissertation committee members (Holmes, 2014; Lerine, 2017; University of Rochester, 2019).
Third, a dissertation chair guides the candidate in setting a realistic time needed to complete the dissertation. The candidate must devote adequate time in the development of his or her dissertation to produce high-quality work. Fourth, dissertation chair responsibly assigns the candidate successful progress grade (SP) or no progress (NP) grade at the end of every semester. The award of either SP or NP is based on the objective evaluation of the candidate's work. Moreover, a dissertation chair has a responsibility of guiding the candidate towards the accomplishment of the highest level of ethical and technical quality in his or her dissertation research. Furthermore, a dissertation chair assists the candidate to develop high-quality prospectus and navigate the process of approving the prospectus (The University of Tennessee, 2019).
Explanation of the Role of the Content Expert and the Research Methods Expert
The content expert is chosen by the learner by the candidate at any time and formally included in the dissertation committee at the start or middle of the dissertation process. The primary responsibility of the content expert is that he or she provides in-depth advice to the candidate on subject-related content (Ford, Scott, Goings, Wingfield, & Henfield, 2016). The content expert is also actively involved in the development of the proposal and the dissertation. On the other hand, a research methods expert ensures that the candidate selects the most appropriate methodology for addressing a particular research problem. That is, s/he ensures that the research philosophy, research design, sample and sampling approach, and data collection techniques are aligned with the research questions and hypotheses.
Explanation of Ways of Communicating with My Dissertation Chair
My Preferred Methods of Communication and Reasons for Choosing Them
My preferred methods of communication with my dissertation chair include email and regular face-to-face meeting schedule. First, I chose email because it has many advantages- such as convenience, saves time, and deliver valid information (Badran, Pluye, & Grad, 2015). On the other hand, a face-to-face meeting with my dissertation chair is vital in clarifying issues that cannot be adequately addressed through email.
Ways in Which My Preferred Communication Methods Will Assist Me in Progressing Toward Successful Achievement of my Dissertation Goals
Both email and regular face-to-face meeting schedule will help me in progressing toward the accomplishment of my dissertation goals because it will provide constructive feedback regarding various aspects of the dissertation process. That is, through feedback, I will be capable of developing a high-quality dissertation that meets Walden University requirements.
