Introduction
Casino gambling falls within the gaming industry. Casino gambling involves a particular business carried out within a business establishment with the primary goal of playing games that involve risks associated with money in the hope of a required result which is usually money. Casino gambling has been in existence in the US for a long time. Many jurisdictions and states around the country such as Las Vegas (which is seen as the gambling capital of the country) have passed laws allowing casino gambling to take place. Indeed, we as a state are yet to pass a legislation that allows and promotes casino gambling. There have been many discussions towards the passing of the bill over a long time with a lot of opposition towards its passing (Barberis, 2009). This paper is aimed at addressing the areas that the bill will address looking at the pros and cons which will arise towards passing or defeating the bill.
It is important to ensure that all sides of the divide agree and understand the implications of passing the bill. As such, it is important to consider all the views raised about casino gambling (i.e., the pros and cons) and get a middle ground that will see everyone comfortable about the passing of the bill.
Pros
Casino gambling is a business venture that will more than likely raise the revenue for the state. It is a no-brainer that casino gambling in Las Vegas runs states such as Nevada. Having such revenue will help the state accomplish many things. Another advantage of passing the bill is that casino gambling will help ensure that other forms of illegal gambling taking place are shut down because the casinos will offer an avenue for the people to participate in organized legal gambling. It will also offer employment to many of the citizens of the state. Another pro is that the state will have more businesses coming up because of the passing of the bill such as hotels, car hire services, and many other services that are connected with gambling. Also, the state will have tourists from other parts of the country visiting which in turn creates revenue (Thompson, 2009; Barberis, 2008).
Cons
A major con of passing the bill is the potential of gambling addiction among the people which will see many people lose money, families, and even their lives because of the addiction. The addiction could also promote crime to get quick money to gamble which would make the state unsafe. Another con is that casino gambling is usually associated with crime, violence, and promotion of unhealthy values which will cause the state to be more unsafe. Money business such as these is volatile to escalating violence once in a while with drug dealers, prostitutes and philanders operating around casinos. Casino gambling could also be a front for the organized crime done behind the scenes such as money laundering and prostitution. Casino gambling could also kill small businesses that exist in the state such as small motels as most casinos have hotels where they can provide accommodation (Thompson, 2009; Barberis, 2008).
Distributive Bargaining
Indeed, the pros and cons are about the same when putting side to side. However, it is important to consider the fact that it is possible to have a middle ground especially if these positions are explained to those opposing its passing. Indeed, the pros are pretty clear as they are going to benefit all the people (both proponents and opponents of the bill). However, there have been questions about these benefits especially their cannibalistic nature in that they swallow up other industries (Thompson, 2009). These have been included in the cons section of the paper. The cons have more points for discussion and form the bone of contention here. I aim at discussing these issues and assess their negative implications and how these can be transformed into positives.
For one, gambling addiction does not necessarily need to arise out of casino gambling, in fact, there are more avenues of gambling other than casino gambling. For instance, online gambling is not disallowed since it can be done in the comfort of your home and can create a gambling addiction. On the issue of crime and violence, the state will ensure that there will be enhanced security and protection with more police officers employed with better weapons to keep such issues at bay. The state will ensure that organized crimes are not perpetrated in the state through regular audits and surprise visits to the casinos to ensure that they conform to the tenets of the constitution and federal laws. Also, the state will ensure small businesses are protected by all means through collaboration between the casinos, small business and other stakeholders (Thompson, 2009; Barberis, 2008).
Conclusion
We as a state are ready to ensure that casino gambling benefits the people. It is, therefore, important as discussed above to ensure that all the cons are turned into pros if we want to ensure the passing of the bill. As the junior congressman of the county of *****, I support the passing of the bill and hope that this will help in ensuring the bill becomes a law.
