Objective 1: Build a long-term career in the Human Resources (HR) field in order to utilize people-oriented skills to develop and promote a positive work environment.
Getting the right foundation is crucial to the short-term and long-term success that will be derived from undertaking a career in the Human Resource (field). Building a career in the HR field involves attending college to acquire skills that will be used once I graduate. Enrolling in an established learning institution that has been offering bachelors of HR will put me in the right hands since I will be trained by professionals that have helped shape the lives of others. In as much as the lecturers will be training me, I will invest my time and resources to read widely in the HR field which will enable me to understand the dynamics of this industry as a career-oriented person. Interacting with people in the HR class and the university will help sharpen my people skills which will be used in my workplace environment. As a person venturing in the HR field, I must possess interpersonal and intrapersonal skills that will enhance my ability to relate with others in this field.
Arguably, my skills will also be necessary to create a positive work environment. Every worker should work towards transforming their workplace by coming up with innovative and creative ways in which they can introduce a change that will positively impact the lives of clients. For instance, as a person who understands the role of the human resource in a work environment, I appreciate that employees need to be motivated once in a while to ensure they remain interested and enthusiastic about their jobs.
Objective 2: Enhance my HR educational and professional skills in the healthcare industry that will ultimately have a positive impact on patient care.
As a professional working in the healthcare industry, interacting with patients is part of the daily routine. These clients need to interact with a practitioner to give them guidance and comfort during their sickness. My professional and educational skills need to be highly polished to enable me to handle the patients with the care and attention they need as they recover. Enhancing my educational and professional skills will require me to attend all my classes and research widely on the application of HR in the healthcare industry. I will read widely by making use of the school library since I will be allowed an unlimited supply of books and peer-reviewed publications that have been written by professionals in the healthcare industry about the HR topic. I will also ensure that I research bibliographies written by medical practitioners practicing the HR career. Learning from them will make it easy for me to adopt a proper approach in my HR career which will also leave a positive impact on the care I extend to the patients I handle and interact with daily.
I will enhance my professional skills by volunteering in the healthcare facility to get a first-hand interaction experience with patients. I will work under the senior personnel in the healthcare facility as I learn through observation by watching how they handle their interactions with patients. The experience will help me gain confidence when I complete my studies and I need to handle patients daily. One of the lessons I have learned is that each patient is unique and there is no single strategy that works for all.
Objective 3: Build strong communication skills, both written and oral, as well as active listening skills in order to solve problems in a well-organized and effective manner.
To complete this objective, I will attend a communication class provided at the school and ensure that I am keen on the lesson. A practitioner in the healthcare industry must be a good listener which creates a conducive environment within which a patient can open up about intimate health issues. For instance, a practitioner can help a person going through gender-based violence get the necessary assistance from the act and art of active listening. A person with good communication skills talks less and listens more. Talking should be done when one has the right information as opposed to throwing random words. Listening skills make it easy for one to identify the main source of a problem and resolve them with ease and in a well-organized and effective manner.
Oral and written skills will make it easy for me to collect information from patients as they talk about the symptoms they have been experiencing. Each patient must have a file that keeps all their health-related records. The written skills will equip me with the knowledge and abilities to capture only the most important information from a client during the data collection stage. For instance, I will only summarize the most crucial highlights of their health condition by using simple language that other readers can comfortably read and understand. Oral skills will equip me with the knowledge to start and maintain a conversation with my colleagues and my patients. Asking the right questions to the patients who need medical assistance will also be made possible through the oral skills I will gain in my professional training.
Objective 4: Build knowledge of institutional policies and procedures that will strengthen decision-making and problem-solving skills.
Institutional policies and procedures are important as they specify the protocols and procedures that govern a professional industry. As a person going through training to equip me with knowledge and skills in the HR industry, I will need to familiarize myself with any guideline that dictates the behavior or standards that a professional in this field must uphold. I will also ensure I understand the policies and procedures in a healthcare environment which practitioners must observe in addition to keeping all patients safe by extending care to them. Being equipped with the institutional policies and procedures will help prevent getting into problems that may result in conflicts between me and the hospital management for failure on my part to act and perform my expected duties. The knowledge will also improve the decision-making process of both major and minor issues. For instance, when handling a patient issue like discharge from hospital after being admitted, I will need to consult with the relevant policies and procedures to ensure I remain within the stipulated rules. Such a patient needs to get a pass from the nurse and doctors before I can allow them to go home after clearing all their incurred bills.
Objective 5: Build knowledge and hands-on experience specifically in recruitment, payroll, and employee benefits
I will attend an attachment program at the healthcare facility to equip myself with knowledge on the specific needs of such an environment to ensure after I graduate as an HR professional, I will easily blend in the workplace. A hospital's recruitment, payroll system, and employee benefits are dispatched differently from a manufacturing firm since their needs are different. During my internship program, I will ensure I understand all the various needs of a healthcare system as I will be needed to handle such demands when I start practicing as an HR practitioner. I will need to separate the clients' system from that of the employees in a hospital. For instance, I will need to calculate the employees' leave days by considering both paid and unpaid leave.
