Introduction

From the analysis of Fred's case, it can be concluded that he is suffering from delirium disorder. Delirium is an acute disease which results in abrupt changes in the brain. The abrupt changes cause emotional disruption and mental confusion. The psychiatrists examining Fred should have relied on the following information to make an accurate diagnosis. To begin with the psychiatrist should have reviewed Fred's chart to examine how his problem began. He should also have conducted a thorough assessment to test Fred's cognitive and psychological functioning to make an accurate diagnosis. The psychiatrist could have misdiagnosed Fred with major neurocognitive disorder due to the fact that Fred was having difficulties with his memory.

Diagnosis and Treatment Stressors

The analysis of Fred's case resulted to the identification of a number of symptoms which he was experiencing. These include:

Disturbance

Fred experienced disturbance in orientation to the environment. According to his wife Fred was not comfortable at the new nursing home which he had been transferred. They describe his new environment as a prison and complain of how doctors only gave him medications after medications. Fred was disoriented in the hospital as he was uncomfortable of being separated with his wife. He also was disoriented after being admitted in the nursing home. Fred also experienced disturbance in attention. His disturbance developed very quickly as soon as he was admitted in the hospital. Fred's disturbance represents acute change ("Macmillan Launchpad: Login", 2019).

Change in Cognitive Domain

Fred forgets very fast. He forgets how to pronounce names and ends up murmuring some words. This is clear when his wife results to assisting him to answer questions and complete sentences. Bernice confirms this when she states that Fred was confused and thus that prompted the social worker to call in the psychiatrist. Fred has a hard time figuring out where he is and the reasons which led to him being there. He also does not remember the names of his wife and granddaughters, persons he has known for years. However, his language has not declined and also his decision making has not declined. His memory loss has only happened recently ("Macmillan Launchpad: Login", 2019).

Models of Abnormality

Biological

The biological model adopts a medical disease perspective. According to psychologists, the main focus of the biological model is that abnormality is an illness which is caused by malfunctioning parts of a human being. For the case of Fred, this model is the most applicable while considering treatment options for Fred. The urinary infection should be considered as the main cause of the abnormality which Fred is experiencing.

Cognitive

Cognitive model of abnormality focuses on the dysfunctions or cognitive changes in the thought process. An individual who lacks sufficient thinking and planning skills is likely to cause a number of psychological disorders. Foe the case of Fred, he faces the absence of sufficient thinking and suffers memory loss. He fails to remember the names of people he knew for years. He also has trouble figuring out why he is at the nursing home or at the hospital.

Humanistic

The humanistic model argues that people are likely to develop abnormalities after they encounter unrealistic expectations set by others as conditions which must be achieved to gain respect and love. For the case of Fred, he was disappointed by doctors and nurses giving him medications and setting conditions and orientation environments which he was not comfortable.

Treatment Recommendation

Medical Intervention

I recommend a medical intervention. He would benefit most from medication to treat his urinary infection as well his neurocognitive problems which have developed recently. Fred should also be involved in physical rehabilitation so as to recover from the surgery.
