Introduction

Overpopulation in India influences politics, economics, and cultural development in the country. People from poor neighboring countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Nepal move into India to look for jobs and other essential needs. The massive immigration of these foreigners into the country contributes to the overpopulation pandemic. Overpopulation is ruining the economy of India because of limited job opportunities and overexploitation of scarce resources, especially in the agricultural and health sectors. Interactions among the Indians and foreigners leads to the exchange of cultural practices and religious beliefs hence causing the extinction of the culture and religion of the native Indians.

Intellectuals foresaw the looming overpopulation crisis in the country in the previous century and advocated for its people to embrace birth control measures. The Indian government planned to achieve a zero growth rate by the 21st century; therefore, it established the first Family Planning program in 1952. The government also imposed more laws, policies, and strategies that would help it reduce the population growth rate. It promoted female education, raised the marriage ages, offered positive incentives for sterilization, and more, but India's population continues to rise. This research seeks to determine more strategies that the Indian government used to control population growth, and the outcomes and provide recommendations on best practices the country should adopt.

Communities in India and China implement population control measures that favor the male gender. Women face social, physical, and psychological trauma when they choose abortion as a birth control alternative for male babies. Their cultures force them to abort female babies and keep male children because the latter gender is more valuable than the former gender.

The primary sources of research about the impact of overpopulation in India, government strategies to contain the situation, and the results and recommendations are through acquiring information from peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and books.
