Nursing Philosophy: Paper Introduction

Philosophy of nursing is a set of beliefs, thoughts, and principles that guides a person's practice of nursing. It is the basis of nursing activities and decisions in various situations and contexts. It also includes the ethical values that nurses follow according to the code of ethics for the nursing profession. My philosophy of nursing is based on my personal views regarding the four concepts in the nursing metaparadigm, which includes the client, the environment, and nursing.

Factors that Influence Nursing Philosophy Development

Contemplating my beliefs and principles, my nursing practice, and nursing's code or ethics are all factors that influence the development and implementation of a nursing philosophy. These factors played an important role in my philosophy which is the basis of my nursing practice.

Concepts of the Nursing Metaparadigm

Person/Client

Nursing's main objective is to improve the well-being of people (Maville & Huerta 2012). Because I believe in patient-centered nursing, I am able to treat illnesses and also take care of the spiritual or emotional needs of my patients. Quality care should not be centered on illness but rather the person receiving it. Nursing should also provide guidance and care to patients in order for them to thrive outside of acute-care settings. Person-centered care is good for the patient's well-being, creates a supportive environment for recovery and benefits society (Maville & Huerta 2012).

Environment

My belief is that a patient should be surrounded by people who care, are beautiful, and have a positive outlook on their health (Maville & Huerta 2012). The environment must not pose a threat to health and wellbeing. It should also be peaceful and tranquil. My view is that health care should be accessible easily and include social, cultural and spiritual dimensions that promote healing and well-being.

Health

My view is that health includes many factors, including physical, mental, spiritual, social, and cultural well-being that enable people to thrive in diverse environments. Maville & Huerta (2012) state that illness-centered nursing care is a poor and inefficient way to provide medical care. The ability of a person to access health care, their financial status, genetics and the environment they live in all play a major role in their health. How a person interacts with their environment will determine how healthy they are (Maville and Huerta 2012).

Nursing

Nursing is both a discipline as well as a profession. It is based on core human values such freedom, choice and responsibility. The creative application of knowledge gained through research and experience to provide nursing interventions that meet the needs of patients on a variety of levels (Smith & Parker 2015). As a profession, nursing is concerned with improving the well-being of people through the use of compassion, knowledge, concern and knowledge.

Complementary Nursing Theories

My nursing philosophy fits well with Watson's human care theory, Nightingale’s environment theory, Pender's health promotion concept, and Watson's human caring theory. Watson believed that nursing is founded on caring (Smith & Parker 2015). Nightingale's theory suggests that there is a direct relationship between patients and their environment. Pender sees health promotion as a dynamic concept, rather than an absence of disease (Smith & Parker 2015). It's the improvement of human well-being.

Philosophy of Nursing: Summary and Conclusion

Philosophy of nursing refers to the beliefs, thoughts and values of nurses. It is often highly individualized and tailored to suit personal preferences and values. It is heavily influenced by theories and concepts of nursing as well as the nursing metaparadigm. My nursing philosophy can be influenced by three theories: Nightingale's environment theory and Watson's human care theory.
