Introduction
Nurse leaders have numerous roles and responsibilities. One of the functions of nurse leaders is insight. Good nurse leaders usually have a good vision for the future that they endeavor to communicate with other nurses and inspire them to fulfill (Carr, 2013). Secondly, nurse leaders ought to advocate for the other nurses, the patients, and the nursing profession as well. Nurse leaders should possess excellent advocacy skills (collaboration, problem-solving, listening, and communication skills), which ensures that they have the best interests of the patient, nurses and the profession at heart (Tomajan, 2012). Thirdly, nurse leaders should endeavor to promote quality healthcare for the patients. Nurse leaders ought to institute patient care plans that are geared towards disease prevention and health promotion (Papa, 2013),
The US healthcare system requires all nurses regardless of their executive position to always strive to act as leaders for this nation's dream of the best healthcare experience for all citizens to be achieved. To cultivate excellent leadership skills, nurses utilize the following principles. Firstly, nurses focus on excellence by ensuring that they advocate on behalf of patients and make a difference whenever they provide services (Duquesne University, 2019). Secondly, they demonstrate their leadership and management skills by focusing on establishing individual accountability through the institution of personal goals and the use of a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities, and threats) approach (Duquesne University, 2019).
Conclusion
In conclusion, nurse leadership is essential for the transformations of healthcare organizations; therefore, nurses should make spirited efforts to gain the knowledge and the skills required for one to be a nurse leader.
