Introduction
During most of my vacations from school, I usually visit New Orleans to spend some time with my grandparents. I still remember when I last flew to New Orleans, the city was just the way I recalled it, with very high humidity and the temperature around 98 degrees thus the need to keep reapplying deodorant to remain fresh. The Spanish and French architecture in the ancient neighborhoods like the "shotgun house" gives it a mystifying and a romantic appeal. The city offers a different lifestyle in its world which is distinct from the bustle and hustle of many metropolitan areas.
Many inhabitants apart from the tourists walked across the streets which appeared as if a tornado had carried the trash back and forth through the city. I was picked from the airport by my grandparents, and we headed back to their house. They were as happy as I was to see them after a long time and after some moments of embracing each other; I sat at the backseat of their old beat but a useful car. This gave me an opportunity to watch some of the events of the New Orleans as we rode back to the house slowly. Some mature men and women stood at the corners of the streets trying to deal drugs as some of the addicts came and got their fix for that day. I could also see some peers fighting each other to secure a parking lot at their neighbor's house.
The thing that I enjoy most about the city is the idyllic and calm elders slating at their stoops and porches glimpsing at me. New Orleans appeared as someone froze it in the time since most of the people I saw when I last visited were in the same place I left them, although many people usually stay the same, some things do change. I was so glued at the happenings of the city such that I did not realize that we were already at my grandparent's house. I like relaxing at their home because of the small cottage feeling it gives me; it is just amazing with rose bushes and big oak trees surrounding it with a small garden waterfall making it very beautiful.
I felt calm the moment I walked into my grandparent's house. At least the worries of waking early to attend classes and struggling to finish my assignments late at night vanished from my mind. It is my perfect haven away from the community recreation centers and after-school clubs back at home when I tire from studying the whole day in school. New Orleans is the one place where the southerners with the perfect southern hospitality live.
I was so eager to go and tour the city, and my cousin offered to accompany me as I visited the several sights of the French Quarter. We first stopped at Cafe du Monde one of the best places in the city and made the perfect meals I have ever tasted. For instance, the cafe makes the sweetened dough like donuts; it is usually fried and sprinkled with the confectioners' sugar which is so delicious when taken with hickory-blackened coffee. Immediately we finished having our delicious meal, some of the spare change was thrown at a rusty bucket at the street.
As we came out from the cafe, we saw some kids who were entertaining the crowd through tap dancing. Soon after watching the kids, we headed to the French market; one of my favorite spots. I like the commodities sold there like clothing, candles, purses, and jewelry with no set prices. Anything at the market can be bargained for, and this day, I decided to buy some cowries shell jewelry which I have never seen any other place. New Orleans is one of the best locations with loads of culture and a unique personality. From the Bourbon Street at the French quarter to the Saint Louis cemetery. The food, architecture and the music of New Orleans reflect the city's rich heritage.
