Introduction
The movie Mr. Holland's Opus is the story of a zealous musician whose dream is to write one remarkable music piece. He realized that playing music at social events such as weddings did not sufficiently put food on the table for his family. Therefore, he was forced to accept the reality of take up a day job as a music teacher in John F. Kennedy High School to pay his bills. Fortunately, he found out that teaching and his bequest to instigate young people through music in an effort to improve their critical thinking skills beneficial for their future careers in music, was indeed his delight. The article below is a reflection of Mr. Holland's Opus movie.
Over the course of the film Mr. Holland took on many roles over the course of the film which also included a father and a husband. Other main characters featured are Glenne Headly, Jay Thomas and Olympia Dukakis. The film can be credited for raising the concern about the value of teachers in the society. There's need to reinforce educational epitomes with resources such as funds (Smith, 2018). The significance of culture to any country that would like to deem itself as civilized was also addressed.
He was facing a number of challenges during this time, which form the theme of conflict in the movie. Not only did he realize that he committed more time attempting to succeed in his music career more than he spent time with his family, but also were his students unable to relate to his concepts of music. Moreover, his wife gave birth to their deaf son, Cole. He struggles to cultivate a relationship with him upon the realization that his son might never appreciate his art. The theme of conflict is also evidenced by the fact that Mr. Holland hated his job but due to life's circumstances, he had to survive in it.
To resolve these issues, Mr. Holland, with assistance of the school principal was brought to an understanding that he had to find the same passion for music and transmute it to his teaching job if he was to survive at work (Smith, 2018). His wife, Iris Holland learns sign language to be able to communicate with her son. Given that some of his colleagues including Vice Principal Gene Wolters resented him and the importance of music education, which led to a strained budget, he was able to win over so many others with time such as Principal Helen Jacobs. That motivated him to seek success in making conventional music more available to his students through the use of rock and roll. It ultimately paid off since several of his former students clandestinely went back to the school to celebrate his legacy (Sahlen, 2017). His wife and son too, although sidelined for many years, were proud of the respect and affection he received after he retired.
Conclusion
Conclusively, it is evident that the Holland family was just like any other family that had to conquer a lot of obstacles to find quality time together. Eventually, Mr. Holland realized the impact his job made to both his students and the society at large (Sahlen, 2017). Finally, the story of Mr. Holland was an elaboration of "Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans". An unfulfilled music writer defined his own success as a music teacher.
