Interaction log experience hit me with new realities. These realities were way different than what I thought my life and interaction with media was. Initially, I had a rough idea and perception of the media output I interact with most often in my day-to-day activities. Through the exciting media log project, however, I made discoveries that proved way different than my perceptions. What I thought was, turned out not to be. Before the exercise, I felt I interacted most with the television. After the media log, however, I realized I interacted more with the internet than any other media outputs.
My frequent interaction with programs and applications that rely on the internet proved beyond a doubt that I consumed more media from the internet than different outputs. Unlike the other media outputs that I consumed content from, I interacted with media content from the internet at least once a day. Of all the five days that I documented my content consumption, I surfed the internet on all of them. There are times that I did not record my media content consumption on the media log because I forgot. The truth is, I viewed more and more content from the internet every day. I documented about 17 hours of interactions with the internet in just five days, the significant outputs being YouTube and Tiktok.
The second output that I consumed most content from was the television. I noted four out of the five days as days that I interacted with the Tv. I spent at least ten hours on television within five days. In two of the five days, I consumed content from the radio for approximately 3 hours in total. Recorded content on my phone ranked last with below five hours in those five hours. Though I access the internet through my phone, there was minimal consumption of media content from recorded files on the phone.
Another realization was that I most frequently absorbed media content alone. Even though there were several instances when I interacted with the media, I was in the company of my brothers and my girlfriend, the times I was alone outweighed them. There were days that I consumed media output alone for the entire day. Even with most interactions being of me apart, most of the content I consumed was entertainment. The radio and tv programs that I listened to or watched were substantial on entertainment than education. I realized that I followed more content on comedy, celebrity news, and gossips. Of the .six times, I was on the internet; I only viewed educational design tutorials once.
I used international news agencies as sources for news. I preferred international news because of all agencies, international news agencies, DW primarily, reports with little bias, and maintains credible reporting even on sensitive matters. In the Coronavirus situation, for instance, DW will tell the real story, unlike local news houses, which might downplay the issue to make it appear under control.
Conclusion
Moving forward, I would change several things on my consumption patterns. First, I would give a higher allocation to valuable information other than entertainment. Secondly, I would ensure that I consume the media with others more and more. Watching alone bolsters isolation, which could easily lead to depression. The media blog exercise was fun and educational because now, I know what I should do differently.
