Introduction
The aspect of death and its effects have been feared for many years in human history since man has not clearly understood the concept of life and death. The paper purposes to identify the theories as well as the aspects of death and present these theories concerning the movie and the aspects of death that have been discussed in the movie and what has been portrayed. The movie that has been selected for this research is the Death Note. The movie will be analyzed from the death point of view with the thematic concerns being the distribution and understanding of the theme of death from the movie's point of view. The views of the author will also be required in order to establish the connection between the movie and the theories available in the literature.
The Death Note
The movie Death Note was first released in 2017 from the famous media house Netflix. The movie explains the life of a young high school student who stumbles on a mysterious book which possesses the power to end a life of anyone who has been written between its pages ("Netflix'S Death Note Misses What Made The Original Work"). The student by the name Light Turner picks a target, and the person dies eventfully upon a twisted series of incidents that may seem to be an accident. The boy is then granted the power to take life from anyone he deems fit hence turning the book into a vigilante mission. He goes further to create a mystical creature by the name Kira a god of justice which he credits for the killings. These incidents eventually attract the attention of the law enforcement as portrayed by an enthusiastic and at the same time eccentric detective by the name L.
Light has a girlfriend from school by the name Mia with whom they possess some inner relationship although she is faced with acute anger issues. The two make out and commit grieve murder crimes together using the stated 'death note' without remorse or a sense of guilt. Their love is rooted in the plot since the result of their disagreement brings the power of the book to an end as they want to use its mysterious power against each other. Furthermore, the attachment between Mia and Light is not well established, and their romance becomes the reason for Mia helping Light in committing these atrocities ("Netflix'S Death Note Misses What Made The Original Work").
Although the movie may seem unusual at first, the characters are involved in an aura of death where they may even formulate the way the victims are to die. The book has rules and Light who is the protagonist is fascinated by his new abilities to command life and keeps on testing the limits with which the book can be able to pull off. Instead of relying on what the book has to offer as the methods of death, Light suggests simple heart attacks which are accompanied by instances of decapitation and defenestration.
The movie is selected due to its active instances of death which is represented by a simple book and an active god of justice Kira. Death in the movie represents both punishment and fun for the protagonist who in this case is fascinated with his new might. He does what he pleases with the book and the people around him notice his new attitude. For a long time, death has been considered beyond the control of man unless murder is committed. This is, however, peculiar in the movie as Light can put people to death without actually having to deal with the actual guilt and conscience. The feelings associated with death are mostly grief and sorrow for the bereaved and guilt for the offender. In the movie, this is not the case as there is no attachment with the actual acts of murder.
The theories available in literature involve the various opinions about death and grief as well as the quality of life. According to the department of health and human services (2014), the quality of life of an individual is a multi-dimensional aspect of life that comprises the various psychological, social and spiritual functioning of the person and may vary from one person to another. The psychological aspects of one person may differ with those of the other hence their quality of life becomes different. The stages of death that have been brought forward by Dr. Elizabeth Ross (1969) propose that people go through five crucial stages during their death.
The knowledge that a person is going to die is backed by denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. People may talk about death naturally but may not fathom why they need to die; hence they become angry at one point before they can agree within themselves that they are dying. These stages are only undergone by a person who is clinically ill and is faced with the disturbing reality of death occurring (Copp, 382-390).
Conclusion
Death according to theory has been associated with the tireless efforts to overcome the psychological thoughts of depression and grieving. The movie does not present this about death except the ending of life in very controversial ways that may not even allow the victims to understand what they are going through. The death has also not been associated with philosophy nor has it been associated with religion in the movie which is the case in the proposed theories of death. Death in the movies has been associated with the games of high school students with anger and behavioral disorders which is not the case with the theories. The loss of life through the failure of various organs through accidents of clinical diagnosis is not within the power of human beings but is considered in the control of a higher power.
