.The primary motivator in this film is Ms Wilkinson. She is the one encouraging Billy to pursue his career as a dancer. According to the film, Ms Wilkinson is not only the pioneer of the dancing career but also responsible for the success of the little boy. By creating a conducive environment and a good rapport, Ms Wilkinson gets the credit of changing the mindset of a little boy from impossible to possible. Despite being an unfulfilled middle-class woman, she chooses to offer free classes to Billy to sharpen his choreography, a move that marks the start of Billy's career. The financial status of the boy prompts Ms Wilkinson to encourage him to attend open auditions where there are no payments. She willingly offers to train Billy in the evening, privately. Julie Walter, the dance teacher, plays the role of encouraging the boy to pursue his career, which the boy ultimately achieves.

Billy is growing up in the era of miners' strike, mostly branded as the worst dispute witnessed in the history of British industry. His father has financial problems due to the ongoing miners' strike. As a result of poverty, his father wants Billy to pursue a boxing career that will harden him to survive in this trying time. Later, after his father noting the talent possessed by his son, he changes his mind and supports him. Jackie promises to look for enough money that will take Billy to London auditions. Ms Wilkinson sacrifices to pay, but Billy's father believes he can raise the money. His neighbours and fellow miners make little pledges to help the boy show up in auditions. With all these efforts combined, Billy was presented with an opportunity to attend the London auditions, a chance he would not get without the help of others.

The idea of supporting an individual talent appears to be petty in the film. There are other fatal problems that the community is facing. The issues facing the community at large need to be a priority. The strike is an indication of poor working conditions in society. Supporting the talent of an individual while down looking at the problems of the community can be quite dangerous. Community woes are critical, and what affects the community affects everybody, including future generations. Billy's father decides to support his son's career and ignores the prosperity of his job. The issues affecting him are unresolved, and poverty is persisting. Ms Wilkinson Is a middle-class worker who offers to train the little boy for free, failing to advocate for a stable society where everyone can get enough wage to cater for their needs, one of the judges seem to be more concerned with the strike when tells Billy's father "I so hope your working-class struggle goes incredibly well for you". This is a sarcastic statement to illustrate the ignorance of various actors in the film regarding the ongoing strike.

According to the film, everybody seems to be interested in nurturing Billy's talent, jeopardizing the life of coal mining. In the time of the worst industrial dispute in the country, talking about the elderly, making efforts to facilitate the success of the young talent can be insensible. For a fact, the nurtured talents will ultimately perish in the hands of the broken society. Eradicating poverty cannot start with sharpening the abilities of people, but by first addressing the facilitators of poverty to the community at large.
