The role of women is limited to basic chores done around the house and are not considered in bigger conquests. According to Abigail, the men are tyrants with the name of masters and never allows a position for women. For instance, Abigail writes, "Remember the Ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands". The statement reminds men that the ladies are also important in decision making.

The book The Devil and tom walker is also a social informer. The author gives a picture of a society living in greed and materialism. The relationship is guided by mistrust, and the men are under pressure to acquire monetary gains for the sake of their wives and families.
