Introduction
The American literature by eighties was very creative and mostly addressed many aspects of daily living. This paper analyses some literary work and profoundly examines the social contexts in it, the political views highlighted in the texts and the theological pictures. It also looks into the ideas on environmental history and the environment. The themes discussed are from two books, these are the letter of Abigail Adams and the novel the devil and Tom Walker by Washington Irving.
The theme of social life is found in Abigail's letter. Aa text entitled "Remember women "by Abigail Adams addressing her husband, who was a government official talks about the society and the role of women in it. The letter reveals an America that never lived in peace and had enemies. Men lived in fear of each other, and there were plans everywhere to share colonial portions. The role of women is limited to basic chores done around the house and are not considered in bigger conquests. According to Abigail, the men are tyrants with the name of masters and never allows a position for women. For instance, Abigail writes, "Remember the Ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands". The statement reminds men that the ladies are also important in decision making.
The book The Devil and tom walker is also a social informer. The author gives a picture of a society living in greed and materialism. The relationship is guided by mistrust, and the men are under pressure to acquire monetary gains for the sake of their wives and families. The issue of race is not so prominent, and the wealthy are gaining respect. The deal with the devil shows the distance people could to pursue a better life.
The theme of politics is evident in both texts. In Abigail's letter to the husband, men are the most powerful. It is, however sad that the power is being misused and used to treat women bad and with a little dignity. Women lack agency and recognition and are not satisfied. Their loneliness pushes them to seek more prominent positions in politics. The title is an awakening call to the men who are ignoring the plight. In both literary texts, the role of the government is to provide basic things to the government and make them feel cared for.
The theological theme of these two books is also much reflected according to Abigael. The creator is an equal being who would like to see everybody being treated with equality and dignity. For instance, Abigail writes,' 'Regard us then as Beings placed by providence under your protection and in imitation of the Supreme Being make use of that power only for our happiness." This report proves the faith the society, especially the women, had. The trust in an equal and a just being has made them fight for their rights without stopping. According to the following text on the devil and Thomas. Religion is viewed as a hiding place from sinners who are trying to avoid a past. The church is also a place for the most influential and business tycoons in society. It represents a symbol of righteousness and a remedy to the people running away from the dark side.
