Liberalism in Canada Essay

According to (Horowitz, 2016), Canada has had two liberal phases according to its history, Before the 1960s the politics in Canada were focused on the freedoms of one individual, however liberalism based on collective liberty can be dated after the inception of "United Empire Loyalists and introduction of the constitution which advocated the overall freedoms of individuals in the society. Canada was focused on the ideas of North Americans of the freedoms of individuals and representative government. The second liberalism started approximately in the 1960s with the election of "Lester B. Pearson" as the leader of Liberal Party in Canada. This liberalism is based promotion of socialism, rejecting capitalism and individualism, promoting socio-cooperation and collective interest among the Canadian citizens, rejecting self-interest and all this described in the first and second photos and further discussed further in the paper. Canada is currently more liberal than America after the second liberalism.

According to (Smith, 2009), Both modern liberalism and socialism can both be traced from a Classical perspective of freedom. For instance, socialists believed in capitalism and individual properties while modern liberalism is not concerned with the collective interests of its citizens but only self or individualistic freedom. Liberalist advocates for open and free elections, unlike socialism which is controlled by a central government. Most liberalist theories promote capitalisms; however, the pictures from sources 1 and two advocates for the abolition of capitalism, support collective interest and promotion of cooperation on issues that unite the citizens in Canada.

According to (Horowitz, 2016) the first picture shows four populaces who have lined up to pass a security check being manned by a security person. The guard I holding out a bottle upside down, making its contents spill on the floor. From the picture, we can sum up that guarding the general population than concentrating on the freedom of individuals. Hence the role of the state is that in time of crisis is best to focus on safeguarding the general society rather individuals. This exemplifies why it is essential to concentrate on the checkups at the airport to avoid another incident of the 9/11 attack.

According (Smith, 2009), in the second picture its shows the security guard troops surrounding female Vietnam War campaigner in California over forty years. From the illustration, we can sum up that individuals have the right to demonstrate and that is why we are seeing the lady protesting during the Vietnam War. It also shows that an individual has the right to complain as long as it is peacefully. We can derive this example from Gandhi who led peaceful protests in India. However, in this particular case, the protestor is surrounded by the security guards. This also depicts that the security guard is there to stop the protests from taking place and that is why they are surrounding the female protestor. The role of the government according is not by the needs of the citizens living in Canada since they are being curtailed the opportunity to express themselves through peaceful protests.

According to (Horowitz, 2016), in the third picture, it shows the security troops saving the residents of New Orleans from the floods that had been caused by Hurricane Katrina over ten years ago. According to the illustration, this act of saving of the residents demonstrates the role of the government in prioritizing safety, addressing emergencies and saving of individuals in time of crisis. This kind of situation can happen only during the time of natural disaster, that have recently occurred and also it shows the government has disaster management techniques if in case an emergency arises.
