Introduction
The idea of keeping animals in zoos has been part of human life for a long time. Many people find it uncomfortable with this practice. The reason for this is that animals have experiences that not are friendly as in the case when animals are in the wild. Although zoos are helpful in preserving endangered species, they should be banned because they encourage inbreeding and keep animals in caged spaces for profits.
Keeping animals in zoos is necessary as it helps conserve endangered species. Zoos are essential and should be maintained since they enable scientists to conduct research .it also allows veterinaries to access sick animals and treat them. When both scientists research on animals it helps increase understanding of animals (CBS News, 2014). The information so obtained is used by veterinaries to treat sick animals thereby reducing chances of death. Lack such attention can undermine the survival of species as people cannot know to maintain species of animals if they live in the wild. However, this argument is weak because animals can still be accessed while in the wild. It is an argument that benefits people and not animals.
Zoos should be outlawed because they encourage inbreeding. When animals live in a confined environment, they are likely to mate with close relatives. Such an occurrence is likely to lead to diseases and disorders in animals (Ujvari et al., 2018). As a result of this, the death of animals can occur often, and the caregivers are forced to kill them as the case of giraffe, Marius, who was killed in Denmark to discourage inbreeding (CBS News, 2014). In the wild, it is less likely that inbreeding occurs. Hence the death of animals as a result of diseases would be avoided, or human killing would be necessary if animals stay in the wild.
Zoos need to be outlawed because they reduce animals into commodities for money and entertainment at the expense of the health of the animals. Keeping animals in cages in zoos denies them adequate space to exercise and also prevents them from living in their natural habitat. The caged environment interferes with the evolution of species due to the disruption of patterns of the death and breeding of the animals (CBS News, 2014). Handlers of these animals give little attention to the motioned consequences because they care more about profits and entrainment than the health and survival of the animal species at large. When people focus more on how animals can be used to generate profits, their role in sustaining the lives of all living things on Earth is significantly reduced. Hence, it is not necessary to avoid keeping animals cages, and this should start by banning zoos.
Conclusion
As a conclusion, keeping animals in zoos should be discouraged because it keeps them away from their natural habitat. Worse still, it is majorly used for generating profits for companies as opposed to ensuring that various species of animals. In some cases, animals are killed to prevent inbreeding which is dangerous to the survival of species. Due to their minimal positive impact on animals' survival, zoos should be abolished. It is important to note that animals survived for centuries without zoos which are creations of human beings. Therefore, zoos have outlived their time and, therefore, should not have legal existence.
