Introduction
Interpersonal communication can get looked through various lenses, but mostly described as an interactive dialogue between two people who are in a close relationship or are connected by some level of understanding. Primarily, this involves related skills which get acquired with time and increased interactions. During the interpersonal communication, there is always two ends of conversation which include the message receiver and message sender. In actuality, this gets conducted by utilizing the indirect methods and direct methods. In essence, successful interpersonal communication happens when the sender and the receiver understand and affect the message (Bylund et al. 2012). Through interactions and reflections, I have been able to examine and evaluate my interpersonal communication as well as other people communication skills who are intimately connected or possess close relationships. Before the evaluation, I felt that my interpersonal skills were mostly ineffective and only above average. This evaluation prompted me to evaluate my communication process which has enabled me to identify ways of improving the interpersonal communication with others. Following the exercises conducted in the course progression, it is evident that active listening is crucial in interpersonal communication which implicitly influences my non-verbal cues as well as others perception which in one way or the other causes barriers to effective interpersonal communication. This essay will reflect on the interpersonal communication skills observed from the video of two close people interacting, and the will comprehensively describe the barriers and their appropriate resolutions. Essentially, understanding the shortcomings is imperative in improving the levels and effect of interpersonal communication as a consequence developing the relationships between people which is the objective of this paper.
Fundamental Elements of Interpersonal Communications
Among the elements of the interpersonal communications that I observed include the nonverbal factors. The body language and non-verbal factors mainly comprise of the body language which has an effect and the interpretation of the sender's verbal cues. From the vantage point of view, I observed that eye contact is one of the essential elements in nonverbal communication. Moreover, the posture of the body impact on the reception of the information and message. For instance, I noticed that facing and slouching implied lack or little interest. Other non-verbal gestures such as shielding and fidgeting show lack of openness(Lee et al. 2012). Therefore regarding nonverbal communication, I made observations that people should apply encouraging nonverbal cues such as smiling, nodding, eye contact with other cues. Another element of interpersonal communication is the paraverbal factors. These factors comprise of the voice pitch, rate of speech and the tone. These are merely used to emphasize the message. Following the video clip provided, the way the speaker stressed particular syllables, affected the interpretation of the messages. Additionally, the volume of the speakers is very crucial in conveying the concerns and importance of the message. While these elements work independently, I noticed that they need to be used concurrently to ensure understanding and improve clarity. Hence, constructing the message and delivering it in concise and clear manner is imperative to reduce confusion and misinterpretation of the message. Therefore, by ensuring that the communicated message is clear, concise and understandable, the participants make it more efficient, and the message does not require further analysis for understanding.
I use these elements to communicate with my colleagues at work as well as on a personal level. Although I felt that the message was apparently and concisely received, I realized that every recipient of my message is different. According to the communication and translation premier, every person's communication style is unique. While at work, I experienced many consulting approaches and my objective has always been to answer the question quickly and in detail. However, this has been the problem because I failed to realize that the receivers of the message are different and not as knowledgeable as I am therefore they may not understand some of the processes and terms I use in the communication. Following ta he fears to ask again, the employee may nod the head and walk out although he or she may not have ve understood what I was explaining (Vrij, 2014). Hence, these differences which are caused by the unique factor result in miscommunication, a phenomenon which I have realized impacts the level of production because of lack of feedback. However, the elements mentioned above for interpersonal communication are effective in addressing such miscommunication issues. Essentially, correcting the communication errors has helped me manage information of the workers and also enabled them to understand my message.
On a personal level, my wife and I come from different cultures. The difference in culture was in actuality the main factor that strengthened our relationship because we were curious about each other's way of doing things. However, with time I learned that attention to each was gradually depreciating, that is, the listening skills diminished although we both loved each other. This lack of focus and poor listening skills made her tune out most of the time. She could be speaking while my mind wandered onto other projects and when she refers back to the previous statement, I find myself entirely clueless. The zoning out was the leading cause of the miscommunication problems in the relationship and a factor that prompted me to take steps on how to improve my listening skills. The improved listening skills such as the use of confirmation questions, nodding and agreeing or disagreeing, has improved her interest in sharing ideas more often than never. By improving our interpersonal communication, we have achieved strong understanding as well as increased our connections. I have learned that the effective interpersonal interface has enabled us to solve most of our relationship conflicts. Additionally, I understood that the collaborating and communicating with my wife calmly has increased the clarity of the message and enabled us to improve the comprehension of each other's message a factor that ensures trusts, contentment, and understanding on an emotional level in our relationship. Furthermore, we ensure that our emotional conflict settles before addressing the conflicting issues which have been a great approach to enhance our interpersonal communication (Levin, 2006)
Additionally, a combination of non-verbal and body languages in interpersonal communication is a typical form of a conversation where people with different dialects try to strike a conversation between themselves with the aim of understanding each other. This form of communication is typical in that different people travel to different regions of the world and meet people of different native languages, but because of the need to communicate a point or a demand, there will have to be a form of communication that will occur between them. In my case, I try to strike a conversation between myself and in-laws who will have to converse a point and as a right speaker I will get left with no option than to make the communication a possibility. In this case, I will prefer to apply the form of gestures that will have to enable us to communicate relevant information to my partner. Some of these sign languages include facial expression, sign language, body gestures and motions that will pass a pointer to my inlaw. So far this form of communication has been active since there are the necessary signals and sign that can be easily understood even if you are not conversant with the sign language. I will always try to use my hands, alongside the facial expression and other forms of body language to indicate or communicate a point to the person we have a language barrier. If communication is difficult, I will opt to use a piece of paper and a pen to use more communicable things such as drawing of images to indicate that will signal a form of communication. I will always try to pay attention and make suggestions and logical guesses to try and help them pass their point to me. Though I have tried this form of communication, the barrier is still high because our language is limited to few basic needs that can be secure communication, but there is no more profound communication between us. This communication has been effective in all of our encounters since I can formulate and master some of the language and official words that will indicate an understanding of some sort between us. The use of routine gestures to suggest some form of communication from both us has been very useful to show how close we have been and our ability to navigate through the steep terrain of the language barrier.
Nonverbal communication plays a critical role in enabling me to express myself to my non-English speaking in-laws. However not all communication occurs effectively through the use of nonverbal communication considering that am not skilled in using language neither are my in-laws conversant with that form of correspondence well due to the type of connection. We have learned how to strike a balance in the discussion at this moment I will signal them by the use of hands and some forms of verbal signal that will accompany the use of the sign language. For example, when I want drinking water, I will signal them by the use of hand and indicate the sign language of holding a cup and drinking water so that she will understand that I need some water. For instance, whenever I have to go out and seek her to accompany me, I will signal to them by the use of my index and middle finger to indicate that I am walking and calling them. By the use of sign language, I have to show them that am in a position to understand their feelings and moods and being there for them all through the given time. For nonverbal communication to be practical and effective, we had to incorporate some verbal language that was very effective in delivering messages like the sign of approval when she responds well to the sign language that I have shown. On her part, she will also show me a sign of approval when I also get the body language and the signals that she will issue me. I have come to develop a mutual understanding with me through step by step understanding of the natural sign language and few words that we have learned to pass across. However, I came to realize that sign language is not only possible, but it needs some use of words so that they can link a given the word with some form of sign language (Levin, 2006)
There are many strategies for marinating a healthy interpersonal relationship between two people who are in constant communication with each other. The excellent form of interpersonal relationship begins with proper communication techniques between the two persons. Attentive listening is the best way to maintain a unique interpersonal relationship whereby each person will pay good attention to each other when one is speaking. Paying attention is an indication of an attentive listener or a person who values the time and input of the other person (Jones, 2014). The person listening to the other speaker should be an active listener by participating in the discussion, such as suggesting some few words and responding by either using phrases such as "yes, okay, I understand, I see" among others. While the speaker should also create opportunities that call for the other...
