Plot Summary

Renee Bennett is one of the main characters in this film, she is overweight, and in her 30s. Her weight issues are depicted in the daily activities that she is undertaking. She visits a cloth store, and the clerk notifies her that she can only get oversize clothes in the business's online store. When she visits a Soul Cycle class, she meets a gorgeous young woman based on western standards. The woman is kind to her, and Renne is astonished as she is not used to beautiful women being friendly. In one of the visits to the Soul Cycle class, she collapses and gets injured. When she regains her sense, she believes that her body has changed, and she is now a beautiful woman that she had desired all through (Bramesco, 2018). She becomes confident, and this enables her to get her dream job, she manages to become social and gets a boyfriend.

Themes & Motifs

Some of the themes highlighted in this movie include that of confidence depicted through Renne. The confidence enables her to get the things she desires in life, including being a social person, getting employed at the main office, and a boyfriend. A person can be confident in their skin. People should be empowered to tackle various life challenges and any bullying. Confidence should be from within, just like the case of Renne. The theme of friendship is prevalent in the movie. When Renne meets Mallory at the Soul Cycle class, the lady is friendly to her, and she is astonished since she never expected a beautiful lady to be kind towards her (Dargis, 2018). Renne and her two friends, Jane and Vivian, have a strong friendship to the extent that they are willing to engage in a three sign up process on a dating website.

Feminism in Film

The Bechdel Test is a tool that is used to measure women's representation in a movie. The test features a situation that must involve at least two women that must be named, and they must be discussing a particular issue other than about men. The movie I Feel Pretty passed this test, considering that when Renne attends the job interview, Lily LeClaire's granddaughter, with the help of her assistant, is the lady that manages to check her credentials. Therefore, they discuss Renne's qualification, how she will manage to undertake her duties. There is a discussion that involves Lily and Avery when they are discussing Renne's marketing skills (Brian, & USA Today, n.d). When Renne visits the Soul Cycle classes, she manages to encounter Mallory, who initiates a conversation with her. Mallory is wondering whether Renne is in this school for the first time like her. Despite passing the test, the film is feminism considering that it has stereotyped women as people that are not confident with themselves. The issue of body-shaming that is depicted through Renne stands to paint women in the wrong way. Women are forced to undergo tough occurrences in life to achieve certain standards for them to be deemed as acceptable in society, a painful issue (Jensen, & USA Today, n.d). Renne seems to think that she is supposed to look like Mallory, who is slim, young, and classy.

Conclusion

The film I Feel Pretty is shows what women endure to remain relevant in society. Renne is one of the main characters, and she feels that her body is overweight and she has to do something about it. The women take the Soul Cycle classes to excise and get injured. She manages to become confident from the believe that she has realized her ideal body size, a move that gives her an opportunity to get the desired job, become socially active, and get a boyfriend. The theme of friendship is highlighted in the movie through Renne, Vivian, and Jane. The film passes the Bechdel Test since there exist scenes where several women are discussing issues that are not about men. Some of these include when Renne is getting interviewed by Avery, and when there is a discussion about her marketing skills. However, there is stereotyping of women as they depicted as insecure people.
