The first world war, even after a century has erupted, it still shapes the world, and its history lives on in the collective memory, political culture and in books. The first-word war is also known as the Great War. It was started on twenty-eighth July in the year 1914 and lasted in November in the year 1918. The years 1914 to 1918 saw Europe engage in a conflict involving a greater area and a higher number of people. The Great War showed the end of old age and the coming up of a new generation. Many of the social political and cultural development of the late twentieth century accelerated other than being produced by the war. The Great War had many experiences which have extended deeply into the language of many people and in the imagery of the countries of Western Europe and the lessons continues to motivate the writers and people born the years after the war had ended (Ericsson, 33).
The First World War had many impacts all over Europe, and this has made the history of the twentieth century. The battle took place in Europe where its significant powers split into two forming alliance group which was the warring sides in the war. The Great Britain, France, and Russia who were also known as the Soviet Union formed the triple Entente while the Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy joined in the Triple Alliance (Piketty, 48). The curiosity alone would help to account for the continuing interest in how the alliance started the first world war. The essay is going to cover much about how the coalition began the war, the analysis of the war in the sea, air and on the land.
The First World War started as a result of the assassination of Franz Ferdinand by a group of Serbia and Croat nationalists. (Evans, 90). Franz Ferdinand was the next king of Austria-Hungary and killed when he was on a visit to Sarajevo the former capital of the Turkish province. The assassination of Franz Ferdinand provoked an international conflict. After the murder of the Austria-Hungary king, Austria -Hungary made a series of demands on the government of Serbia which the government of Serbia could not be able to meet. As a result of Serbia not meeting all the requirements, Austria-Hungary with the support and approval of Germany declared a great war on Serbia. Russia as a great friend and also an allied with Serbia declared war on Austria-Hungary. Then Germany declared war on Russia as a way of helping Austria- Hungary; this resulted in France and Germany saying battle among each other. Eventually, after all, this has happened, Great Britain declared war on Germany when Germany invaded the neutral country of Belgium.
The Great War started as a result of the conflict between the nations and made the war to continue all over in Europe. The First World War was fought on two fronts; the Germans used the western front to invade Belgium then gaining military control of the relevant industrial regions in France. The war on the west front acted as a central theater of the Great War.
According to (Butler, 1006) the recreation of Germany made changes in the balance of power in Europe and to the international system. Germany was the most active military on the content and had large expanding industrial resources making it feel more superior than the other nations. The Germans had established a plan which was known as the Schlieffen plan during the First World War. The idea was to go to the north through Belgium and come down into France as that they can be able to win Russia militarily. After the Germans sunk the United States of America cargo ships, the United States of America declared war on Germany because of good cultural ties and the friendship with the allies. Another reason that made the alliances to start the world war was that it meant that local conflicts, even minor border disputes rather than remaining local would draw in all members of the coalition. The battle between Austria-Hungary over Serbia also involved Russia, which had territorial ambitions in the area. The conflict resulted in the crisis between Russia and Serbia and made Russia not to offer any help to them against Austria-Hungary. The alliance system caused war because it made a small conflict to spread and turn out to be a bigger war. The battle between Serbia and Austria-Hungary would have been relatively small and insignificant, but Austria-Hungary allied with Germany and Serbia allied with Russia made the struggle to become a big war. The alliance caused the fight to explode hence affecting not only Europe but the whole world ( Piketty, 52) during the Great War, the coalition is a defensive measure and this cause division with Italy that led to the failure of alliance biding by the terms of the alliance during the war.
The alliance used different methods to fight each other during the Great War. Report by MacKenzie, 110, shows the rise of socialism in Europe established a broader context of the fighting at sea, on the land and in the air. In the year one thousand nine hundred and eighteen, the allies started the use of trench warfare, the use of machine gun and rifles. The trench warfare was in both western front, and the eastern front. It involved digging deep trenches in the ground as a defense against the enemy, in the Great War the trenches stretched many miles and made it easier for one side to be able to defeat the other hand. The western front in the First World War, located in France used the trench warfare to fight against their enemies. (Ericsson, 28) .The great world war ended after signing of the Versailles treaty. The treaty negotiated by Germany where German boundaries and reassigned liability for reparations.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Great War stands out, and its history remains forever. According to the report the First World War was contributed by the poor decision and choices of the crisis in July the year one thousand nine hundred and fourteen. Those who were involved in making the decisions were often to a greater extent than realized and their choices were limited in their actions. The nations had the feeling that they will lose their credibility if they support others. The war caused a lot of effects in Europe such as the downfall of some monarchies such as Germany, Austria Hungary, and Russia. Also due to the use of cruel methods in the war, there was a lot of suffering and loss of lives. Many nations became bitter because of the war which resulted in another fight later.
