Introduction
Harvesting of energy from the environment in order to power sensors is not only attractive in the market but also entails an efficient usage of energy, while facilitating additional flexibility in the design of the system. Therefore, wireless sensors have been developed for the indoor lighting controls, to obtain the relevant information regarding light intensity to regulate the required sources for the occupancy (Bouzid, Mbarki, & Omri, 2019). This project proposes the development and introduction of ambient light sensors for the Samsung Company. They are SMART light sensors that will harvest light for indoor lighting. Samsung ambient light sensors were developed based on the existing phone ambient light sensor (ALS) concept, and are aimed to be compatible with any smart-lighting system. The sensor will measure the amount of luminance within the room, and by using a luminance-aware sensing protocol, the information will be communicated to a controller. Therefore, the controller can determine the dimming levels of the smart-light system, thereby reducing energy wastage considerably (Market Watch., 2019). Although the Samsung ambient light sensors have a massive value proposition as illustrated, it is necessary to evaluate the market attractiveness for the new product, to facilitate an effective marketing strategy.
Market Attractiveness
The global smart lighting market is expected to continue growing in the coming years. This technology is designed based on the efficient utilization of energy, including automated controls and high-efficient fixtures that make necessary adjustments based on the environmental conditions like luminance and occupancy (Transparency Market Research., 2018). There has been an increase in demand for Internet of Things (IoT) technology, penetration of OLEDs, as well as the emergence of light fidelity (Li-Fi) technologies that have resulted in the increased adoption for the smart lighting. According to the Business Wire report, the smart lighting market is expected to continue growing and reach over $24.02 billion by the year 2023 (Business Wire., 2019). This is a projected increase from the previous market of $7.42 billion in 2017. Such growth in market share demonstrates a rise of 21.6% CAGR in the same period (Business Wire., 2019). Besides, Imarc report indicated that the market is expected to reach a value of $ 23.6 billion by 2024 (Imarc., 2018). These reports show the need to develop systems that can be integrated with the smart-lighting systems for indoor efficient energy use. Therefore, the Samsung ambient light sensors are expected to have a boom in the market once launched, considering that Samsung already has a brand name globally.
The United Kingdom, which is one of the primary target markets, demonstrate a massive attractiveness for the Samsung ambient light sensors, considering its policy development for the smart-lighting system to increase on the efficient utilization of energy (Phelan, 2018). Reports have indicated that about 5% of UK households have the smart lights systems of different kinds. Some of the common brands in the UK market include the Philips Hue, with a market share of approximately 31% followed closely by Hive with a market share of roughly 30% (Mashable., 2018). In this regard, the two companies have a market share of about 60% (Mashable., 2018). Surprisingly, it has still been established that about 40% of the consumers in the UK are not aware of the smart light systems. However, this is an opportunity for Samsung ambient light sensors that the company should explore considering its global presence and reliable brand name. By carrying out extensive market research and market development, Samsung will be able to educate the customers who do not have the basic knowledge of sensors regarding their importance. Besides, the market in the United Kingdom for Samsung has been robust, thereby presenting a massive chance for the market entry of the new product. Also, the company has adopted a pricing strategy that is lower than the leader in the market, hence giving them an edge in attractiveness.
The global market for ambient light sensors has been segmented massively based on the application, region, and product output. For example, the market can be categorized into the digital and analogue output. For the end-user categorization, the market can be classified into the robotics, automotive, and consumer electronics, among others. Finally, regarding geography, the market can be categorized into Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, South America, and Middle East & Africa (Transparency Market Research., 2018). A report by the Transparency Market Research found that North America has the largest share for the global ambient light sensors (Transparency Market Research., 2018). However, the market for the smart systems has necessitated the increase for ambient light sensor systems in Europe, especially in the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy. Besides, there is an increase in the desire for digital smart systems that are deemed to be more efficient. There has been a growing awareness in not only the developed but also in the developing countries regarding energy-efficient solutions (Reuters Plus., 2019). Such developments are a major contributing factor to the market. Besides, there is an increase in the urbanization globally, which presents a huge population with a high a paradigmatic shift in consumer behaviour, which has facilitated technological advancements, including the smart energy systems.
Smart cities have continually increased in developed countries, and are getting a lot of attention in the developing nations. They are cities or urban areas that make use of different electronic systems for the Internet of Things sensors in collecting of relevant data while using the insights that are gained from data to manage resources, assets, and other services efficiently. According to Bouzid, Mbarki, and Omri (2019), lighting has been a significant responsibility for the smart cities, representing about 38% of the total energy bill. Therefore, it is evident that inefficient light wastes a considerable amount of financial resources while affecting human health and behaviour (Bouzid, Mbarki, & Omri, 2019). In this regard, the developed markets are significantly attractive to ambient light sensors and other lighting strategies that facilitate the efficient use of energy and resource appropriation. This means that the Samsung ambient light sensors have an attractive market globally that promotes an improved ecosystem.
Finally, there is increased global concern regarding climate change. Therefore, many countries, as well as regional and international organizations, have developed and implemented different rules and regulations that pertain the efficient utilization of energy. In this regard, various measures have been adopted, including increasing the efficiency of the incandescent bulbs. Besides, there has been an increased need to reduce heat emission from the lighting systems to improve their energy utilization. Thus, such developments aid the market growth for the ambient lighting systems. Such global concerns and steps taken coupled with the ongoing technological evolutions like the smart lighting systems show the suitability of the Samsung ambient light sensors for not only residential but also commercial buildings in the UK and beyond for the consumer preferences for better interior lighting systems.
