Introduction
Rainwater harvesting is one of the procedures that are used in collecting and conserving rainwater. It helps in reducing the speed of runoffs. Having the rain barrels helps to reduce the speed of runoff for the water is captured and stored in these storage facilities for future use. A good number of them can be fancy and simple, and the procedure that is used is keeping the barrel at the end of the downspout. A hose or spigot can be connected to the barrel that is then used to water the yard or the garden. The practice proves valuable in the arid regions where the water can be stored for use in the dry seasons. When it is captured, cases of runoffs are stopped, and it is difficult to encounter a situation where the water is causing destruction.
Water pollution happens when the runoffs get into contact with surface materials, such as oil, fertilizers, and pesticides. However, when it is captured in a collection point, there is a reduced case of the water getting contaminated with these surface materials. Companies release sewage materials into the streams mixing with the runoff water, but when the rain harvesting process is implemented, the rainwater does not get to reach the streams (Pinks, 2016). A significant number of cities in the world are working on implementing this procedure to lower storm water velocity and reducing the increased water flows.
The rainwater harvesting program should be harvested in all measures and by all entities to ensure that the program becomes a success. Individuals should connect barrels to their houses and collect the rainwater before it flows to the streams and oceans. The water will help them in dry seasons for drinking and water plant purposes. As part of the corporate social responsibility, businesses and organizations should ensure that locals to undertake the process of rainwater harvesting to help in conserving the environment. The harvesting process ensures that pollution and soil erosion does not occur and the environment will be protected from any damage.
The nonprofit entities aim is to assist in managing the various problems happening in society, and this means that they have a great responsibility to ensure that societies are living optimally. The non-governmental entities can manage to reduce the cost of their operations by encouraging the rainwater harvesting programs considering that when people are suffering from drought, these organizations are the first to help manage the situation. The local governments have a role in supporting any program that is helping to solve problems in society.
The other benefits that are realized when there is the implementation of the green infrastructure process include helping in the pollination process. The number of pollinators in the world is on a decline, and there is the likelihood of the vegetated storm water being used to help in pollinating plants. The management processes undertaken under this program leads to low cost for developing activities when undertaking the operations of landscaping, site grading, and paving.
The air quality is improved since the presence of vegetation helps to reduce smog that can cause breathing problems during summer. The management of water runoff means that vegetation is conserved, and it helps in ensuring that there is reduced temperature levels, lowers the air pollutions, and reduces the cases of health center visits. Therefore, the available funds are used for other development activities. The image given below shows an example of rainwater harvesting sytesm and its importance to a society.
