Introduction
Being one of the most-watched series of all time, the Game of Thrones was truly an amazing show with a huge fan base. From the beginning of the first season, everyone knew that it would eventually come down to a grand battle for the iron throne, and ultimately, someone unexpected took the throne. This paper seeks to evaluate the most potential characters who would have taken the throne when the curtains came down, and more specifically, who deserved the throne the most. It focuses on three characters that is; Cersei Lannister, Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen and their journey through the story.
Cersei Lannister
First off is Cersei Lannister. She proved over a dozen times to be a survivor and a great political strategist. This made it easier for her to manipulate her way into the position of power because she was always willing to do whatever it took to be able to stay on top even if it meant fiery and massive destruction of anyone who tried to oppose her.
In season's six finale when Cersei laid her claim to the throne, it seemed like she had already conquered it all and taken the throne. After all, she had been able to cause untold misery and pain to her enemies, and had been through her own share of turmoil grief and trauma but managed to carry her head up high at the end of the day in spite of it all.
Cersei was smart and knew exactly how to play the game when power was in her hands. She would dominate. Nonetheless, her attempts to take over control from the side lines would always fail. As she tried to grasp for more power, she tried to control her children too; however, Margaery stood in her way. Consequently, all her attempts to take control of her children ended up, resulting in the death of all of them (Beveridge & Shan, 118).
Despite all strong character, Cersei did not have any lawful right to remain as the queen because of the succession line. Furthermore, her strong desire for vengeance seemed to gradually get the best of her. Westeros had already experienced its fair share of mad leaders, and as a result, Cersei became an unfavourable candidate for the position
Jon Snow
Jon Snow would have rightfully claimed the throne through blood relations with a Targaryen and a stark who were his parents. Nonetheless he would just have been another ruler who took over the leadership. Jon showed time and again that he truly valued fairness more than he did power (Beveridge & Shan, 56). Throughout the eight seasons, he also proved to be savvy, brave and courageous, which meant he was always ready to take a step back and stand for what was right.
He repeatedly showed that he would not submit to anyone, including Daenerys Targaryen, but that did little to prove that he would be able to rule all the seven kingdoms should he have taken the throne. Jon Snow was more of a hesitant leader, and as such, his dedication and bravery to safeguarding the kingdom would only go down the drain if he was going to spend most of his time learning and understanding the symbolic motions that any king or queen is expected to know. Through action, we, therefore, know that Jon was at his best when he was in the battlefield defending his people and when he quietly mingled them, thus the throne was just not for him.
Daenerys Targaryen
More than anyone, I believe that Daenerys deserved to have taken the throne. She was originally from the house of Targaryen, and this made her rightful to the throne by blood. To further indicate why she truly deserves the throne, Daenerys possessed may titles among them Queen of the Andals, Protector of the Realm, unburnt mother of dragons, Rhoynar, Khaleesi of the great grass sea, queen of Mereen and the breaker of chains. By default, it was not possible for her to earn all those titles without being a great and true leader.
To her knowledge, she was the only heir to the throne and the youngest child born of the mad King. Unfortunately, she was taken away by Viserys her brother, and sold to Khal Drogo, who became her husband. Despite their marriage being filled with respect and love, Khaleesi was sold in exchange for money power and strong men who were capable of fighting so that Viserys would be able to claim the throne (Beveridge & Shan, 111). Once she lost her brother and father through death, her life became miserable, and this meant she had to fight tirelessly to reclaim her power.
Regardless of the care, she had for her people, Daenerys was ruthless and was more determined than anyone to get the throne. She even had three fully grown dragons which went on to show how much power she had at the face of her enemies. Despite lacking much experience at the game of thrones, Daenerys had Tyrion Lannister by her side an opportunity she would have totally taken advantage of in order to take the throne (Beveridge & Shan, 156).
Conclusion
In conclusion, therefore, and as seen from the text seen above, I would say that Daenerys Targaryen was the most deserving person to take the throne (Beveridge & Shan, 212). Despite her shortcomings, she proved time and again that she was worthy of taking the iron throne and commanding all the seven kingdoms.
On the other hand, Jon Snow was never interested in taking the throne but was more fixated on protecting his people. This, together with other shortcomings that he had indicates that he was not the right person for the throne. Lastly, Cersei Lannister was in her own way, a great leader, but her deep desire for revenge only proved that she was unsuitable for the iron throne.
